Panther in the form of the Tiger. While Mountain Lion and Cougar refer to the large cats found in the Americas, Panther is a genus name that can be attributed to any of the large cats around the world including Tigers and Lions. The term "Black Panther" usually is associated with Leopards and Jaguars.

There is the Florida Panther in the Everglades (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_panther) so not all panthers are in Africa.

The florida "panther" is not a panther, it is a puma... same genus as the mountain lion/couger

If you are a Washington State alumni or student; you hope that the Cougar is the most dangerous to any opposing sports team!.

Yes, they are! We don't have them around here, so I never knew that they were the same cat with different names. Why in the world does one animal need three names?

Local. Different names for different areas.

That's a strong point... as Shakespeares damsel Capulet said:

"if he were not named Romeo he would still be handsome and be Juliet's love"

Sounds like a contest: How many animals can you name that are the same but have different names: e.g. Bunny, Hare, and wabbitt

The Watcher

Back in the sixties when I was a teenager living in a mining camp in Southern Utah, I had a face-to-face encounter with one. I had just finished watching my dog chase a Jackrabbit through the trees below me. When I turned around there it was about thirty feet away, crouching with its tail thrashing from side to side and letting out low moans. I didn't have a gun or a knife or access to a rock or an escape route. We faced off for maybe thirty long seconds and then my dog showed up. The cat took one look at him and wheeled around and leaped onto a sandstone ledge about ten feet above him and made another huge leap that took him to the top of the formation and out of sight. When I got back to camp I told my mother about what had happened. She had never seen their tracks and wanted to see them so we traveled back to the site. This time we were armed. You could see how the cat come down the ledge to get closer to me. I've always wished that I had access to Plaster of Paris so I could have made casts of the footprints. When I tell the story, I call it a Mountain Lion.
