Yes, they are! We don't have them around here, so I never knew that they were the same cat with different names. Why in the world does one animal need three names?

I was amused that the notable movie "Black Panther" was set in the mythical country of Wakanda in Africa - where there are some large and fearsome cats, but no panthers!

Puma concolor is the MOST dangerous. Unless she's on TV, of course.

Panther in the form of the Tiger. While Mountain Lion and Cougar refer to the large cats found in the Americas, Panther is a genus name that can be attributed to any of the large cats around the world including Tigers and Lions. The term "Black Panther" usually is associated with Leopards and Jaguars.

I think most of us old guys on here aren’t even on a cougar’s radar.

If we have enough money we might be on the radar of a few young cougar cubs.

Jerry et al,

jaguars are the only genus of Panthera in the Americas.

North American cougar/mountain lion/most correctly pumas are not of the genus Panthera

A "panther" is a melanistic ie a black Leopard or Jaguar... both being of the genus Panthera.

Jaguars are larger and heavier than pumas,
logic and reason prevailing, Panthers are the most dangerous.

A panther is like a leopard
except it hasn't been peppered
should you behold a panther
crouch prepare to say ouch
better yet, if called by a panther
don't anther... Ogden Nash
