The donation was well worth it as he has other non photo things that he has been giving me. It seems a lot of people have things they don't need but others can use.

Just watch for signs of physical wear, separation of the sides or corrosion. Toss them if you notice this. Otherwise, they should last a very long time...

I have a couple of 512mb cards along with some 1gb and 2gb sd cards that I still use in my D50. They all work like new and have been used since 2005. Formatting regularly is the key. 2gb is the max for that camera. Not real fast but neither am I sometimes. I use 4gb cards in my Coolpix S9600 and 8 and 16 gb cards in the other DSLRs. All SanDisk all the time. Properly handled they really don’t wear out.

I format my cards ONCE when I get them, just for kicks & giggles. (My cameras will automatically do what they need to do to the card to use it, formatted or not). Been using the same cards for over 12 years, no problems.
But many people like to format prior to each use. Makes them feel confident about the card I suppose.
Oh, I delete the image files on the cards via the computer also.

Everyone has a system that works for them. To each his/her own.I have 16 years of 100% success. Regular formatting works for me but not for everyone. I personally don’t change what works.
