They are everywhere! Last weeek I tried to use the Facebook Market place to sell my Canon 600mm F/4 and a series of accessories. I got an offer to pay my asking price of $4,000 plus a $150 bonus for 2-day shipping. I arranged the shipping and asked to be paid through PayPal. The "buyer" would not send the cash to me but wanted a PayPal invoice. Seemed reasonable so I sent the invoice via PayPal and got a confirmation that the buyer had transfered funds into a "pending account" and I would receive the PayPal transfer as soon as I sent the FexEx tracking number that the package had been shipped.
I was surprised that the shipping name and address did not match the "buyers" name and looked carefully at the PayPal payment receipt. Although it had the PayPal logo, the exact format, and even PayPal copyright information in the footnote, when I looked carefully at the hidden sender email, it was not PayPal but an outfit called PayCenter and was associated with many scams. I reported this to PayPal (who had done nothing as yet) but am certain that they would have got my lens and accessories and I would have gotten a thank you.
The shock came when I later posted the same gear on eBay. I got a sales offer in 24 hours asking that we conduct the transaction directly through PayPal and bypass the eBay fees. The "buyer" offered and extra $110 for FedEx shipping and I would get full price for the gear. I asked where to send the gear and it was the SAME Glendale, CA address!
Let the seller beware!
Anyone need a excellent condition Canon 600mm F/4 with 1.4x M2 converter, Lenscoat, Wimberly-ARCA-Swiss release plate and all extras for $4k?

The part that amazes me the most is that Facebook will ban/suspend people for comments they make but won't patrol these types of pretty obvious ripoff ads. Perhaps the money they make from allowing these to be posted blinds them to the potential ripoffs. In some ways, I think this makes them complicit.

I think ...You're ONTO Them....YEp!

Bob. I think that the ads or comments have to be reported and reach a certain complaint level. But I agree with you that social medial should be responsible for ads on their sites without anyone even reporting them.

Censoring speech while allowing this obvious ripoff just goes to the old adage - it's all about the money. And if it seems too good to be true, it is... now, there's this bridge in Brooklyn I can get for you cheap! PM me...

But shouldn't there be laws/restrictions against plain fraud?

This came up on my Facebook Marketplace. Selling Nikon’s for 90% off. I took screenshots of the adds. I bet they will pull in some poor soul.
You mean to tell me I cannot get a $9500 Nikon 400mm f4 for $950? You think it might be a scam?
The scammers love desperate buyers. If it looks too good, it probably isn't a true "deal". I would love to get my hands on one of the new $7500 Olympus 150-400 f4.5 for only $750. But the true chances of that are Slim and none - and Slim has left town.

Anything goes to get tour money.

Very astute observation. I’m glad that others are able to recognize hypocrisy.

Sad.
The almighty buck over morals, scruples, and dignity.
I came across the same ad yesterday. Nikon Z7 for $50? Oh, yeah, sure, wrap it up. 😀
I wonder if anybody bites on this BS. If it's too good to be true, it certainly is.
