The Carmel Mission was the second of the 21 California Missions and was founded by Fr. Junipero Serra in 1770. Its beginnings were in Monterey, California and soon after relocated to the head of Carmel Bay. Over the centuries it has flourished at times and then fallen into disrepair and somewhat abandoned. There have been several renovations beginning in the mid 1800's and through the 1900's and still continuing to date. There is a very active Historical and Preservation Society that raises funding and supervision of the current renovations. Mass and services are held in the Basilica along with other events. There are three museums within the beautiful Mission grounds and we spent a few hours them and the courtyard along with the Basilica.
These photos are of a stroll through the large Mission courtyard and its beautiful landscaping.

Beautiful grounds and impressive buildings. Your tour is excellent and captures the serene atmosphere. I'll bet those old walls could tell many interesting stories!
Very nicely photographed, jederick.
You do excellent work even when the buildings are not falling down, Jim!

Thank you, Carol...they used Native American labor to a great extent to build the early Basilica and farm the adjacent land...so there probably are many stories never told!!
