We recently discussed hardware issues with Adobe at:
https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-696862-1.htmlI would like to report that the issue I mentioned in the thread is a hardware one. It seems that the GPU isn’t powerful enough for the latest version of Photoshop 2021. Nvidia discontinued its support of the 610M card in 2018 and that is what was crashing PS. Adobe rolled me back to an earlier version with the advice of not updating. The solution is to stay with the earlier version of PS or buy a more capable laptop.
Hmmm.
Another reason to keep what editors I have....
I would consider going with door number 2, a more capable laptop. Is it possible to replace the GPU?
If you stay with the old version and old computer, eventually you are going to be way behind the power curve as PS is updated. You update your car every once in a while, why not our computer. I bet your still not driving a car with a carburetor and rotter and points.

For some.... Some need the latest and greatest.
Two of our three computers are 9 years old;
my cellphone is a Galaxy S-III;
my car is 10 years old;
Still using Elements 14 and 19 along with another oldie, Photo Impact Pro.
I'm not worried about any "power curve", everything does what I require.

even better - keep your hardware up to date so you can use the new software.

Believe it or not, this is not an uncommon issue. In 2019, ON1 PR issued 2019.5, which quietly increased the minimum GPU memory requirement. If running on a recent desktop, buying a graphics board will likely make things well. With a laptop, not so easy....

Better than what?
What new software?
I don't get new software because it's been improved, updated, or has gee-whiz-bang stuff in it if what I have meets my needs.
ie. Turbo Tax no longer runs on our desktop
Win 7 computer I've been using for years.
So we put it on a Win 10 laptop this trip, used it, then removed it.
(That Win 7 laptop died and was replaced with one running Win 10. Our other laptop is still running Win 7.)
But everyone is different in their needs and desires.

I have been going round and round with Adobe on this issue. They have not issued a warning with upgrades to Photoshop to make sure your computer is compatible. And they still want to charge $10/month for not being able to install enhancements. I am not sure that is consistent with the subscription agreement.
Y’All, while I appreciate all the comments and advice, I posted this to give you information I got from two support sessions from Adobe. As I noted, for the most up-to-date versions of Creative Cloud and Photoshop, we’ll need a new laptop. It’s not the end of the world. It’s our travel laptop and when we’re on the road I seldom to the kind of post-processing I do at home on my desktop, which is a custom-built beast. If and when we can justify a more robust laptop, we’ll get one. As retirees on a fixed income, those decisions are made carefully.
I agree that it’s a bit shitty of Adobe to charge full price for a subscription that doesn’t work fully; but, it is a wonderful program that runs on my desktop and even for one installation, I find the price reasonable. Your mileage may vary.

https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-696916-1.htmlI don't know how I could have explained my particular situation any more clearly than I did. It's an 11-year-old machine and the AI-laden version of PS wasn't a glint in Adobe's eyes at that point. Of course, it's my computer that is at fault. That was my point. In fact, earlier versions of PS
do work on the low-benchmark GPU.
What's your point?
Sigh
I'm surmising that when he first got it everything was fine.
As they enhanced the software, the latest enhancement utilized NEW stuff, not supported by older computers.
Original Install ->okay;
Upgrade x -> okay;
Upgrade y -> okay;
Upgrade z -> okay;
last upgrade -> not so much okay.
Not exactly a "not checking compatibility" failure.
My other stuff just "upgrades" also.

Alternatively...so many other options vs. Adobe.
Cheers
