Your photos look a little soft to me, but I can't tell if it is the lens or the fact that you are shooting hand held. Keep in mind that it is recommended that, at a minimum, your shutter speed should be at least equal to your focal length. Shooting at 1/500th at 400mm hand held is cutting it close. I suggest two things. The first is to shoot from a tripod and then judge the sharpness of your photos. The second is, hand held, to bring your aperture down to f/8 and then increase your shutter speed accordingly and, again, judge your results.

For handheld shots, these are good results, Greg. I think Ira (lowkick) makes a good suggestion.

Ira, thank you for your excellent comments. Using it on my Canon 90D the images are sharper and I will try your suggestions. When I use one of my Canon EOS lenses with the adapter I do not have the problem. I really do appreciate the comments and will try out different settings.

Great set Greg. Looks like you've found a good set up for that 100-400mm.

Thanks, Doc. I appreciate your comments but I still want to upgrade to a 100-500mm RA lens.
