We used too, as I am sure you all did, have gas wars and we got down to 11 cents per gallon. But we had a man who owned a gas company and he like gas wars. During a gas war he would send his truck up north and buy he gas when it was real cheap and when the prices went up he had cheap gas to sell doubling his profits.

Yes, I remember that. Charles Chips was one of the delivering companies.

My first car was a 1927 Overland Whippit. It was a good car and you couldn't beat it. I was 16 in 1950. Gas was 19 cents a gallon where we lived and Ovenjoy bread (Safeway) was 9 cents a loaf. Hamburger was 33 cents a pound or 3 pounds for a dollar (go figure). We had some friends who lived in Montana and he was a hunter. Every fall we got a quarter of a deer wrapped in cheese cloth through the U.S. Mail. It was delivered to the door with postage stamps pasted on the cloth with our address. I don't remember if there was anything over the stamps to keep them on. But they did deliver the deer quarter. Progress has changed the world, for the better???????????????

I remember when gas was twenty-five cents, so I must be older than that old man. I remember telling the attendant to put $2.00 worth into the tank.

I'm a fan of the Oxford comma. : )

I remember when gas was 17 cents a gallon and I'm only 74. Maybe cheaper where I lived, suburb of Philly. When I was 16 me and my buddies would put our change on the hood, sometimes less than a dollar that would last all night cruising around in my 57 Ford.

When I got married in 1964 we bought an old Fiat 600. It didn't have a fuel gauge, just a red warning light when you were down to your last gallon. Problem was, I could only afford a gallon at a time so the red light was permanently on, and I had to judge from memory how much fuel I had. Made for pretty stressful motoring, but I don't remember ever running out.

I was in college in 1969-72 and remember buying gas at .27ยข. That was not a 1940's cost, it was a 1970's cost!
