There are many tweaks to levels, brightness etc. The silver toning was actually done at the end, in Color Efex. For "straight" b&w, I encourage folks to explore the toning options within Silver Efex.

Those sequence shots are perfect in the retelling of your creation. So glad you were prescient enough to save them in the first place so they could be shared now. Many thanks for your generous comments, Laura Lea. I kept the psd files without flattening layers, so it was easy to just turn off certain layers to come up with these photo "steps." My filing and naming system isn't particularly well organized, however
