when he landed on the very top branch of an old plum tree in our yard.
mamma and daddy towhee were in the tree too giving instructions but
i just couldn't get a shot of them. this happened while i was trying to get
some shots of a buebird family nearby.
Beautiful shots of a cute little critter

Love the photos and the story, merrytexan, but are you sure that it is a towhee?
I photographed a similar bird nesting by a nearby nature trail here in KY a couple of years ago, and the ID when I got back home was a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. Maybe the other two towhees were just trying to chase it away.

you know what bluezzzzz...i believe you are correct! i assumed that it was the eastern towhee's kid since they
were all in the same tree. after i read your comments, i googled pictures of blue/gray gnatcathers and eastern
towhees, and was so surprised that the blue/gray gnatcather is a common bird in the atlanta area which is where i live. sooo...
thank you very much for your id...that gnatcather is the first one i've ever seen...how exciting!
i feel kind of bad though that i misled a bunch of "hogs" here.

Great shots! I love them too! I have about 6 pair of resident Towhees at my place....I even see them often now up in my sunflower seed feeder trays & not just scratching the ground!
i'm glad you like them too, mustanger, and bluezzzzz commented that that little bird i thought was a towhee
is a blue/gray gnatcatcher. i googled some pictures and sure enough...that's what it appears to be. take a look
at some pictures and tell me what you think.
