What to do, which to buy...I tried both and...your thoughts please.

I think it is not our opinion that will guide you to one of the programs, because they are both very good editing programs. The issue is which of them you feel comfortable with. I have both, but I usually use Capture one because I feel more comfortable with it. Differences between them: LR has no layers, C1 has a very powerful layer system, but if you use LR together with PS this combination is much higher than C1. Resuming, it depends on your choice.

I follow CHG_CANON religiously and rarely disagree with him, but something important to wildlife photographers, is the ability to select and bring into VIEWER (for enhancing or purging) up to 12 images side-side and zoom in/out simultaneously, move around in each image simultaneously, AND (and this is the deal breaker) RATE EACH/ALL ON THE SAME SCREEN...making it easy to purge, or include each in different folders. To do this in LR/PS, it MUST be done in the 2 different applications...ugh!!
Since I am only a couple weeks into the application, I can't honestly review other features yet.
Good luck,

Get FastRawViewer for an initial 1 to 3 culling sweeps through your larger shoots before importing into LR, and then import only those left from culling. If you also use star ratings or colors, apply those in FRV and the designations will import along with the images.

I use a number of presets defined in LR based on the camera and ISO level. I build only minimal previews during import, apply all my presents to the imported images, and only then build 1:1 previews in batch. Then, I begin 1 to 1 comparisons and culling, if needed.

For your 12by example, is there any software that does that?

Actually, C1's "layering" system is really an adjustment mask management system. Lightroom's approach to mask management falls a little short in process, but the results achieved are similar. Unlike a truly robust layering system like Photoshop's, C1's layering is probably closer to what On1 Raw has - stackable local adjustments that can be named and recalled, copied etc - but they do not exist as separate objects, and cannot be exported to a raster image - since they only exist in the raw file. A true layering system would allow for compositing, channel/contrast-based masking, etc which is not possible in a raw-only workflow.

Don't get me wrong - C1 is an exceptionally well-thought out and powerful raw converter - but it is NOT a raster editor, nor does it have the equivalent functionality. It is, in my opinion, the best of the raw editors/conveters on the market for a lot of reasons.

That shouldn't be for us to decide for you. This is a choice you have to make based on your needs and preferences.

I use both. C1 is not an "up and comer" - it's been around as long as Lightroom - since 2007. It is the core tethering, image capture and processing software solution for the Phase One medium format cameras.

Thx Gene, I was being facetious as LR is only one year older.

Great and thanks I will check it out. Seems Adobe tech support was unaware of that route.
Thanks again

Capture 1 permits viewing/zooming 12 side-side (& rate 1-5+colors), is the only sw I know first hand...
