Saw a tee shirt promoting rather similar good advice:
“When in doubt, buy a guitar.”

One of my best friends would get GAS and buy a new guitar. Those babies are expensive!! But he uses all of them regularly and gets the utmost enjoyment out of playing.Nothing wrong with that!! And his wife is OK with that too.

You are correct about anecdotal data. But I am more confident in relying what I know from interacting with 500 kids than with a story about one individual when making a general statement.

Over 40 years ago when I was in n high school there were 2000 students. I’d be surprised if more than 4 of them had SLR’s. Two years later, when I was a photography major, I couldn’t afford a Canon or a Nikon, and definitely not the Mamiya 645 I listed over. It was all I could do to scrape enough money together for a fully manual Fuji with a 50mm lens. It was fairly cheap but it worked great and I loved it. My point is that 500 kids not wanting “fancy” cameras is no surprise and no big deal. The cameras most kids, most PEOPLE, used then were instamatics. Those instamatics were replaced by P&S digital cameras which have been replaced by cellphones. I think real research would indicate that more young people are getting more and more interested in better cameras as they become more interested in content creation.

Ah! So it is your influence, all day - every day, that is turning them off to the photography us old folks cherish.

I'mm trying as hard as I can to do the opposite. And there are a few...just a few who have learned to do some exceptional things. But only the artists. No snapshooters to keep the camera companies in business.

And the ones that are doing serious work have, for the most part, mid-level DSLRs. But there are no snapshooters using anything other than their cellphones. And they are quite good at it. ANd you should see the videos that they make...again with their cell phones.

I am a Nikon shooter as is my wife. We are both in our 70's. Our gear is D500/D800 [me] D7000 [kept in car camera] and my wife's D7100. All our lenses are Nikon from 50mm, 70-200, 200-500 500 pf and 500 f4.
From what I have read and heard the Nikon mirrorless system is way behind Sony.
Is switching to mirrorless now or later going to give me better pictures? Besides being lighter AND having eye detection, will the Sony improve my photos? What exactly should I expect to see if I change? Not sure if my wife is interested changing but I thought maybe just a Sony body and the 200-600 for a start.
