I am not nor have ever been a professional photographer. Unless you count photographer for HS yearbook. I did “graduate” from the Indiana High School Journalism Institute at (Yuck, Wretch) indiana university. It was 65 years ago but I did it because the staff was mostly girls. That didn’t work out well.

I first acquired LR 3.0 and acquired every version up to 6.0. At first I avoided the subscription version but when converted I am happy with the service since. So this is my answer.

Dispensing with the elephant in the room, if one is concerned about the $10/month for the subscription plan after comparing that with your TV/Internet/Phone bill; your coffee or beer; or photography purchases. Especially since you get the full Photoshop, Mobile LrCC and PS,... Then I am sorry but that is the only positive for LR 6.0.

To me that greatest plus for the subscription plan is the subscription itself. There are updates about quarterly that add new features, performance improvements and bug fixes. In between there are occasional critical updates to fix issues that are often operating system specific. Updates for all of the apps in your subscription are controlled by a Creative Cloud app that updates with no intervention required. If you find a release wanting app you can roll back. Just good professional customer service. Does PS same way.

It has nothing to do with Adobe but both Apple and Windows are continually changing their Operating System to improve performance and sell more copies. So the move to 64 bit OS is not going away. Likewise, they tend to eventually see no reason to maintain compatibility with older 32 bit software. Windows has hung in there longer than Apple but eventually old software will not work. Isn’t 6.0 32 bit only?

As for features, if I remember correctly (not a good bet) the Library module has changed very little since 3.0 so in that respect you wouldn’t see a big difference with the Library module. Performance has definitely improved as you might expect.

Referring to the Lightroom Queen’s list of new features some are big deals. The dehase slider is definitely very useful. And the Auto Tone which I used to call “auto over exposed” now gives you a very useful starting point for editing tone. I also really like the new black and white function. Lots and lots of new ACR (Develop Module) improvements that add up to major overall improvements. It seems to me the pace of improvement has dramatically accelerated in the subscription versions.

I am not a competent user of PS but it also seems to be rapidly adding a bewildering number of functions.

I have Lightroom 6, and I have not been using it much. I don't want to convert my pictures to DNG, as it takes up too much space.
I use Photoshop Elements and Elements+. Works great. I also added Tony Kuyper luminosity masking program. Two great additions.
