Interesting list, with an obvious 1 or 2 that are new features I could use, maybe 3 to 5 that would simplify the way I do the same things in LR6. At this point, I'm happier with the saved $360 total (and counting) given I haven't updated my cameras and haven't needed new software either.

SO you Are still using lightroom 6? I don't plan on changing cameras either.

I am using LR6. As mentioned in my experience from this weekend, if you didn't already own the software when it was discontinued in December 2017, there's no way to properly license it today and complete the installation. You'll be wasting your money and time to try with a new purchase.

Your circa 2015 camera would be a good match to LR6. Alas, you need a time machine to go back and purchase the Lightroom software. A day will come when I need to start subscribing. Every so often, I encounter something where PS is needed beyond LR6 editing. Sometimes, I save the image for some future date. Mostly, I delete and move onto an image properly captured for minimal editing.

Thank you for clearing that up! I guess I know where to go! Off to Adobe and subscribe to their monthly payments! Quick other question. I originally tried to send you a PM but I received a message that you had me blocked for some reason. Had I said something in the past that wasn't acceptable?

Can you really get a version of LR6?

I spent the weekend rebuilding a laptop that had been put out of commission by a recent Win10 update. When re-installing LR6, I was reminded the software cannot be installed without first having an Adobe account and the software license key already installed into my online profile for the LR6 verification. These are things you can no longer do in April 2021 in that you can't "add" a purchase of the LR6 software into your profile.

Also, the LR6 software is limited to RAW processing for cameras through Dec 2017. You can convert new RAW files to DNGs and edit in LR6. My experience is the DNG is not the same as native RAW support. I'd consider the DNG as a temporary approach pending Adobe's release of native RAW support for new cameras, not an ongoing approach.

If you're not shooting in RAW, you have several newer and capable digital editors for one-time purchase that are not based on an ongoing subscription model.

I do believe that the way Adobe handles processing so many versions of RAW files, is that they internally convert them to DNG. Adobe tried to get all camera manufacturers to use DNG to avoid having to convert anything.

It may be the age of my LR or the age of my computer, but when people pass me DNG versions from newer cameras, the editing is not the same as editing my CR2 files in LR6. But, I might not have enough variety of cameras and DNGs to support my anecdotal observation.

Looking for some advice on Lightroom. I can pick up a copy of 6 fairly inexpensively but should I? I shoot with an Olympus OMD EM5 MARK II and don't anticipate changing anytime soon. Does the latest subscription service provide much more than Lightroom 6? I guess just simply I'd like to know if presets work the same in both and in general what are all your opinions on the subject? I have never liked the idea of having to pay every month although it's omly basically $10 a month. Looking forward to hearing all your suggestions! Thanks so much!

Not wanting to be held ransom by the subscription method, I still use LR 6 because of the catalog and, I suppose, because I am familiar with it. I find Luminar and, to some extent, ON1 as very useful plug-ins to finish off my color photos and Nik for the B&Ws. They do things for me that LR won’t. I am very happy with this set-up.

As a side note, I am also falling in love with Topaz Sharpen AI.

Based on CHG_CANON’s experience, if you have LR6 it will work for you. If you don’t, it’s not an option.

I’ve used subscription service for more than 5 years. Tech support if you need it, and the updates are great. I also pay it monthly. Very affordable,, as a second item, access to so many other Adobe products too!!

I too stayed with Lightroom 6 for a long time, since I didn't like the idea of a monthly subscription. The fee for that subscription depends on how much cloud storage you use, and it's safe to say Adobe would like you to keep storing your images on the cloud forever, and keep on paying more and more. If, however, you keep your images on an external drive (with another drive as a backup), you can avoid the cloud altogether, and the minimum rental fee is about $10 a month.

It finally dawned on me that most programs keep upgrading, and you have to pay for the upgrade. If you stay with the minimum fee, you never have to upgrade. In fact, the program keeps upgrading automatically, and you get Photoshop along with Lightroom. In the end, you probably come out ahead, or at least break even, since upgrades usually cost at least $120.

The latest version of Lightroom includes a new split toning feature, which allows you to make warm, neutral, and cold tone B&W prints. I also think it has more presets, for both color & b&w. The package also gets you Photoshop (and you can get a book by Scott Kelby on Photoshop for Lightroom Users!). Although I still do most of my work in Lightroom, which has a few adjustment brushes, Photoshop has about 80 adjustment brushes, so retouching, removing unwanted elements, cutting and pasting, and so on, is much easier, and much more effective. Now, I still work in Lightroom, and then finish things off in Photoshop, returning to Lightroom to print.

There IS a copy of Lightroom 6 available on eBay

I bought one off eBay myself. Didn't support the RAW format of my Nikon D5600. Seller said it was upgradable in his listing. Not true. Got my money back after filing complaint. Mailed the software back to the seller. Returned to me as the jackass said no returns and he had an incomplete address on file. Used an ebay generated return label, so it cost me nothing but some slight aggravation. I emailed him again to get a proper address. Never heard a thing. He had 10 copies available. They were marked not for resale or some such thing, and the last I checked he had about 5 or 6 negative feedbacks, all related to that listing. Seller ID was POWE_8677, and he's inactive now - wonder why?
