Gorgeous colors and a good time with the camera. I observe in #1 and #4 the leaves of the plant are in clear focus, but the flowers are not. If that was intended, then OK. But I think with the shallow depth of field you can obtain, the visual interest would be enhanced with the flowers in clear focus and the leaves playing a secondary role... thanks for sharing, Mike!

Thanks, Tommy, that is exactly the kind of comment I was seeking. I see various depths of field and I am a traditional shooter wanting the entire flower in sharp focus, but there seems to be another school of thought.

OK, Mike, here goes. You said you are experimenting with DOF and you also said that sometimes it is a VERY narrow DOF. You're right. And in my opinion, here it is too narrow and sometimes quite distracting, especially so in #1.

I may be judging too harshly, because I'm obviously seeing something different than most folks here. I know you know what you are doing, and you are experimenting, the best way to get better, or to get the result you want. There's no exif data for these photos so I don't know what f-stop you used.

In my opinion (for what it's worth) these don't work for me, the focus is just too narrow.

#1. 3 tulips - leaves mostly in focus - flower petals NOT - quite distracting to me

#2. Single tulip - mostly out of focus - bottom dead brown something in focus

#3. Single tulip top view - mostly out of focus

#4. White tulips - mostly blown out - mostly out of focus

#5. White tulips - very back petal in focus

#6. Yellow daffodil - bottom six petals/tepals in focus - center corona out of focus

#7. Mostly ALL in focus
OK, Mike, here goes. You said you are experimenti... (show quote)

No. KT, that is exactly what I want to discuss. I am traditional and like the entire flower in focus, but there seems to be a school of thought that a focus center with unfocus leaves is a good shot and so on.

Very good set and compositions Mike, especially like the last two.

That is interesting because the last one, with as much of the plant in focus as I can get, is my idea of good. Many people, however, seem to like a sharp focus on part of the flower. For example, the center and outer leaves of the next to last shot are in focus, but the rest of the plant has a slight blur - BUT that photo and the last one get the most favorable comments.

And you are very nice to say so, Susan. Some RWBB and YHBB shots are coming.

Yesterday I took some blue hour closeups experimenting with various depths of field. My Zeiss 85mm can really create a shallow depth of field. This morning I went out the door with the longs lens to get more YHBB shots. The gale that met me convinced me to try another day, so I took a golden hour shot of one of our blooming trees.

In the blue hour shots (#1 - 6) I would appreciate your comments/reactions to these shots.

Downloads are best.

Nice, Mike. #5 does appeal to me.
