Rolled out to a friend's Ranch in the Big Open for dinner and conversation. Instead of one of the newer cameras I took the D3. Pretty normal when I'm working with a camera to try it for most things I might do with one of the newer cameras. I put the AF S Nikkor 28-300 3.5 5.6 G on, not a favorite, but flexible. Weather was not cooperative, none of the promised rain, but cloudy till we were leaving. The sun had set with just a bit of light over the hills these two were at a sixth and fifth of a second hand held. The second benefits from brake lights, a trick I'll remember While we were visiting, we were invited to come see the Sharptails Dance at Dawn, that will be another thread. The Elevator, a favorite subject, this morning on the way.

Nice work with that 28-300. I have one; cannot get sharp shots with it. D850 comes the closest. Thanx for sharing!

Thank you! I have generally found that to be true. Was trying it on yet another camera to see if I could get a good match. I'll probably try to adjust it to one of the cameras. If that doesn't work, out it goes. Many folks are very pleased with the lens, so I should be able to get a decent price.

I find it works very well on my D7200 as a video lens. Not super clear but good enough results for me as I use my iPhone 12 for most videos anyway.

Thanks, good to know. Don't do video or cell phones, but if I sell the lens a useful feature.
The silhouette in #3 looks great with that beautiful sky. These are very nice shots including the tail light glow!

Ken Rockwell loves it and says it's the only lens he really needs on his D850. Of course I don't always agree with what he has to say, but don't have this lens.
What I can't stand is his constant belittling of Tamron and Sigma lenses, especially Sigma. He often refers to them as junk lenses.
He doesn't often review Sigma lenses but when he does he always says they might not work with a camera you buy 10 years from now. Sigma Art lenses are some of the sharpest lenses made today and when I see him make that comment I want to scream, "Hey, Rockwell, I bought it for the camera I have NOW...at my age I may not work with a camera 10 years from now!!!"

I do look at and quote Rockwell on occasion, but don't think of him as an oracle. I bought the 28-300 as a problem solver, single lens with broad range and reach for walk around. Having used it on several different Nikon cameras, over several years, it has produced insufficiently sharp results for my taste. As to other brands, my experience over 50 odd years is best results are gotten when the lens and camera are from the same company. That extends to two other systems used in addition to Nikon. The few times I have bought a non brand lens, they didn't stick - currently don't own one. Others apparently have different results. Its all good.
Very nice night work, QD. I always like to see interesting skies and you captured them well.

Nice shots QD; like the one with brake lights. A decent lens used within its limitations.
