Not using MAC, not using Win 10.
Not having a problem with my salvaged Seagate Barracudas with Win 7.
But neither article says when the quality of Seagate drives may have gone down.
I'm not following your point of the articles.

If you had a Windows PC or a mac you would get it.
Who wants the hassle?

Oh, I get it, a joke.
Noting to do with my question of reliability of the drives themselves.

Looking on Amazon for a 2 TB portable hard drive to store/backup photo's. Choices are: Seagate Barracuda, Western Digital Elements and Toshiba Canvio Basics. All are in the same basic price range so I'd like to hear from anyone having experience with any of these 3 ...., good, or bad. Thanks!

I have 5 NAS drives, all with Seagate Ironwolfs drives. The only drive failures I've had in about 8 years were WD Reds.

For consumer drives, they are pretty much all the same these days. If you are looking for a portable, most 'Togs I know in Los Angeles use LaCie's.

So a drive that does not work correctly with a mac or windows is reliable to you?
It is a piece of junk if you ask me.
Not even heavy enough to be used as a door stop.

Seagate quality has been going down for years. I have no clue why but one thing I do know:
Their warranty goes out the windows if a drive is installed in a laptop.

If you're looking for something small and fast...

https://rog.asus.com/storage/rog-strix-arion-model/

and pick an M.2 chip to fit... It can be fast or blazingly fast...

A device's operating reliability and functional compatibility are different.
But they are related because it's the same device.....
I have no compatibility problem, and so far they have been very reliable.

Some people do believe that if something isn't good in one application, it isn't good in any.

My experience with Seagate is opposite that of everyone here... I've never had a failure of one of their drives in 30ish years and have had 2 WD failures...

No, some people believe that when purchasing a drive it should work once installed. Seagate works at first (in some instances) then goes nuts. THAT IS RELIABILITY my friend.

If there was a warning like:
"Drive will not work reliably on Windows and Mac no one would have any complaint."

I DO have three Seagate Barracuda drives salvaged from desktops that are still functioning fine in my drive dock. Barracudas used to be VERY good also.

At one time, Barracudas and 15K RPM Cheetahs were the Enterprise drives of choice, right up to the point of the infamous Cheetah 7 FC drive debacle where Seagate took back over 1 million drives (under warranty) due to failures. I have a couple of 4GB (that’s GB, not TB) SCSI Barracudas that will still work after being taken out of long service decades ago.

Now as to the answer to the question. If it were me, I would buy a Samsung T5 (or a T7 if I had a USB 3.2 port) or equivalent Intel SSD external, or if it were too small for my needs, I’d buy an HGST/WD Ultrastar Enterprise class drive and put it in a fan cooled external enclosure. Those are the fastest and most reliable options for a single drive.

Because of their reliability I only buy WD drives. They also come with their own backup software which backs up incrementally (new files) each time when run.

If this drive you're buying is not used to backup your files then I would also buy their 5 TB drive as they are on sale currently. The 2 TB drive is only $59 and their 5 TB drive is only $99.

Interesting that Seagate in this key group has lost ground to WD. It used to be the reverse!

My mistake, the My Passport drives come with the backup software...

Have you considered SSD technology instead?
