Which is one of my biggest issues with prepackaged externals - you have no idea from any of WDā€™s published lit exactly what drive is inside.

Not using MAC, not using Win 10.
Not having a problem with my salvaged Seagate Barracudas with Win 7.
But neither article says when the quality of Seagate drives may have gone down.
I'm not following your point of the articles.

Since rthe late 70s, Seagate has had an inconsisten range of quality.
Anybody here remember to not buy Seagate MFM drives with the red light?
Or that Computer Store that replaced them with greens and yellows?
Or the "Seagate Slam"? Or the little bottle of "Seagate Grease" fro the squeaky spindles?
THAT said I have ONE 2009 working Seagate HDD, full of (iso) movies, that still passes tests.

One of these days ....

While many folks love Western Digital because of price and reliability, as an IT guy for over 30 years, I would caution you strongly on this. Unless something has changed pretty recently, these drives use an external hardware encryption board on the power supply. With virtually every other drive on the market, if the power supply board goes bad, you can move the bare drive into another case and you're back in action. With WD, the drive will be unreadable, and the only way to recover the data is to find a board with the identical encryption (they are numbered). I've been through this multiple times (once for myself, the others for clients).
The vast majority of the time, when an external hard drive has problems it will be a power supply issue.

Here's a link to one of the many articles on this subject, for those that want more detail:

My advice is simple: with important data, have multiple backups (at least 2), and keep one of the backups offsite.

That is true ... if you use their built in encryption.
I have three (3! so far) WD externals- tested, used- and shucked.
2x 8tbs, and a 12tb. Plug and play.
BUT these drives aren't truly "portable"- you don't just unplug, throw in the backseat or on the floor.
They are just internal type HDDs in a box- treat them gently and carefully.
And yes, the WDs are coming out as "good deals. Maybe an oversupply of 2tbs, 4tbs and 5tbs?
And the market is asking for 8tbs minimum. There are sales of 12tbs and 16tbs going on.
NOT! promoting any individual business- but I always have eBay, Amazon and Newegg on.
and Newegg's "Shellshocker" kinda lossy type leaders- with patience- can be rewarding.
...
Do NOT use anybody's 8tb and larger HDDs for Raids or NASs! Check for if "shingled" drives first!
Shingled drives will play havoc with your NAS, and can seriously mess up your Raids.
BUT if this is not an issue ... BTW .. How much did you/ are you paying for a WD 2tb external?
I'm looking at another WD Elements, 8tb, $135, at Newegg.
