Well, after fooling around with the D2x, I had an urge to up the ante. I found a clean D3 with low shutter count at an irresistible price and it arrived today. Spent some time getting it set up and working my way through the Manual. Enough in common with the other Nikons that it wasn't hard. Finally got out with it just a bit ago around the area. A mix of monochrome and color. D3 with AF S Nikkor 24-85 3.5 4.5 G on. An impressive camera!
From the images, the D3 and that lens combination looks like a keeper. Sure would like to see those first two monochrome images in download (hint-hint). :-)
These are great. Looks like you are going to enjoy your new purchase.
Wonderful results, especially the church and B&W Granary (?). Is the hotel too unsafe for some 'disaster' interior shots?
That camera was just waiting for you to find it. Lovely shots!

You have to remember Pro Camera or not, this puppy has 12.3 MP. Here you go.

Thanks very much! I'm going to enjoy the capabilities. but this thing is a Brick compared to the Prosumer models.
Looks like you have a winner. Better than the D2X?

Thank you! There was an absentee owner till just a year ago. I really wanted to get in with a model and do some period / ghost shots, but never managed to connect. This family bought the place, intended to turn it into a romantic / period B&B. I hinted, but apparently the roof had leaked forever and the inside was ruined and unsafe plus, and they began demolition.

Thank you I'm very pleased with the test run. No question that is is better. According to camera history this was a giant leap and kept Nikon competitive. The D2x is fun and takes good / interesting photos, but is a little "quaint" by comparison. Feature wise and operationally the D3 is very similar to my other digital Nikons.
Wild man with a new camera - great results, QD!
I have to agree with Mike

Wild for sure - I really needed another camera, not! Thank you! I must say, the beast impressed me. Got to do a bit of research, but my guess is that the D3 captures an amazing dynamic range. Carrying it around will probably result in Popeye forearms.
Nice results QD. What's your purchase?
