I've done the search a few times but mostly I see people are discussing how they are/were always on backorder.

I have been using the 300mm version and like the size, light weight, and results.

Thanks to Uncle Sam's stimulus checks and 5% back on the credit card, I will only have to spend $17.10 of 'earned' money. After a year of being cooped up, I see a lot of walking in my future. A pair of light lenses should be a good fit.

The 500 5.6 PF lens is extremely sharp wide open. Unfortunately I will be selling mine this spring as I just don't shoot it anymore. I have longer lenses that I have been using. You cannot go wrong with it. You can shoot it wide open. The two images below were shot with it, the first one on the D500, the last two on the D850. Detail is outstanding.

Nice pictures Bill.

This and the 300 pf will be my walk around lenses. I don't think anything will replace my 800mm, but it will remain tripod mounted.

I hate to be repetitive, but like many others, i have kept my 500mm PF on my D500 since I got mine last summer. The combo makes such a lightweight combo that you have incredible mobility. One more anecdote: I was standing (socially distanced) with several other photographers at a nature preserve last fall observing a red-tailed hawk on a telephone pole, when the hawk suddenly took off and flew past us. I was the only one who could raise my camera fast enough to grab a burst. Very pleased with my purchase. BTW, I ordered mine from Crutchfield.

If you need to wait for the lens, have you tried the 300mm PF with a teleconverter? I found that works extremely well with the 1.4x.

Some interesting news of it being discontinued.

Nice shot Clark. I have been carrying the 1.4x with me, but haven't needed it yet while walking around. If I am staying basically in one area I typically use the bigger lens on a tripod. I do expext to be doing more walking this year.

I have the 500 pf - all of my posted bird photos since Dec 2019 were taken with that lens. It's fast focusing and it's vibration reduction is the best that I've seen (with Nikon).

I've been using one on a D7200 for a few months now, replacing an 80-400 that I had used for years. I've been extremely happy with it. I hand-hold it mostly. A photo from yesterday's excursion:

I just recently bought this lens and have been debating getting a decent tripod for it. Both of my existing tripods say that the weight load is 8 lbs. The Manfrotto that I have is sturdy with a ball head. I have also heard that I should get a tripod without a center column and also a gimbal head. What do you hoggers use? Thank you.

I am very pleased with my D500 & 500 PF kit. The camera & lens were purchased at the same time and they have been together ever since. I purchased a tripod/gimbal & monopod support for the kit but I have not used them much as yet because the rig is just so convenient to pick up and go. I got mine from Adorama about nine months ago. I just checked the usual suspects in the early morning daily and it popped up as being in stock. I hope you find your copy soon. Good luck.

I have the 500pF and the 300pF. Both offer great clarity and color rendition. I run them on my D850, D500, and D7200. The 500pF on any body is a light treat to carry. I dismount the battery grip and the 500pF on my D500 is fast and fun!

I attached a recent BIF shot. D500, 500pF attached! Fast and light as compared to the 200-500 (I also own one).
Others recommend checking All lens outlets for copy.

I also have the 500mm f5.6 pf and the 300mm pf. The 500mm pf is on my D 500 most of the time and the 300mm pf on my D850. I often add a Nikon 1.4x tc to the 500mmpf. Great IQ from both lenses on both bodies. Get the 500mm and you will not regret it.

Thanks, I love the sandhill cranes, such big beautiful birds. Fun to photograph.

So that letter directly from Nikon themselves that they post is fake?
How do you explain it?
