I can see how you would think that. I used a fill flash that is barely noticeable but it did light put more light on the colorful ornaments on the tree. I had to wait for the right time of day to orange glow coming from the sodium bulb in the lamp post to match the ambient light.
This was a well planed shot, not a snap shot.

Same tree taken from a different angle. I was standing in the open front door to my house looking out.
Then I decided to use a remote while my wife and I got into the photograph. You can see the remote control for the shutter in my right hand.
