If you shoot wildlife is it the camera or the lens?

There are some really good mirrorless cameras out there that will produce better pictures because of new sensors and processing units for around 2500. These cameras have so many features that were not on DSLR cameras. I personally would rather have great glass.

All your camera equipment has been destroyed in a flood and your insurance doesn't cover "acts of God".
Casper the Friendly Ghost offers you two options:

1. A camera of your choice, not to exceed $7,000 and one lens not to exceed $2500
or;
2. A camera of your choice, not to exceed $2500 and one lens not to exceed $7000.

No dodging around here, Casper is only offering two choices

In answer to the title, both plus experience! It has often been said the first 10,000 pictures you shoot are simply to gain experience, after that you're on your way...

Not a large enough budget.

But if I had to stick to that budget I would probably go with a Canon R5 and a RF 100-500 then sell an old EF lens to pay for an extender.

If the budget were a little larger I would go with the same camera and a used EF 400 f/2.8 IS II with both of the Canon extenders.

Both the lens and the camera are important, you can't underestimate the need for pixels to afford cropping, if the budget were a little larger I would go with the same camera and a used EF 400 f/2.8 IS II with both of the Canon extenders.

ROTFLMFAO at all you glass cultists.

You’re all completely dependent on advance performance AF ... which is essentially a *camera* function.

Soon you’ll all be equally hooked on “preburst” aka “pro capture” when it spreads beyond the 4/3 world. And acoarst those are also camera body functions (really just two marketing names for same thing.)

#2. A lens is a lifetime so get the best. $2500 will get a great camera married to a $7000 lens.

Your math matches your perspective.
Or maybe just lack of proofing before sending ? Same either way.

If somebody wants to give me $9500 for camera equipment I’ll let them decide how much if it goes for the camera and how much the lens.

I could get a Hasselblad 50mp medium format camera for about $5500 but only one prime lens at that numbers. I could do better if you permit used equipment.

Not really an ideal wildlife setup.

My concern in this discussion has been the emphasis on equipment and not on technique and natural lighting. Ansel Adams waited for hours for the light to be just right.. I have lived in the same home for fifty years and have the benefit of watching the seasonal changes of the light. When we are patient the light changes by the day and if we miss it this year it will be there next year.

Why are you concerned that a gear thread is all about gear ? Doesn’t matter what Silly Ansel did to kill a few hours. Always hearing about him waiting and waiting. Seems like he was paid by the hour and intentionally headed out too early every time, so he could get paid to just wait around watching the shadows grow. I woulda fired hissass.

You didn’t get the memo ? About how the stated budget is for gear, not for lessons, workshops, etc ? IIRC it was very clearly established in the opening post. I understand it’s possible to just read the thread title and commence to preaching. Sometimes I come here just to sleep through the sermons. It’s very restful. Just the hot breeze and the chattering of the advice parrots.
