Why do cars have radios? Those contribute nothing to the speed nor gas mileage nor load capacity of the vehicle.

Radios are vital - turn it up and your car’s misfires are gone!

They do specialize as well. Canon for example makes cinema cameras. But it probably costs very little to add video to a still camera or to a phone. It's the same sensor and a subset of the same shutter system, so mostly a software issue. Broaden the appeal without increasing production costs much: win, win. I don't shoot much video, but enjoy knowing I can shoot the family singing happy birthday to grandma if I wanted.

I agree, it costs them nothing to install a bit of firmware to give the still cameras video capabilities. But it adds appeal to a lot of people.

So we can have passengers?

So you think cameras should have radios?

How come cars come in all sorts of colors? It's so much more efficient to just make one color, just like all black DSLRs.

"You can have any color you want, as long as it's black."

What do you think GPS and wifi are? And what do they have to do with still photography? Ansel Adams didn't need these features. That pretty much says their superfluous to cameras, probably adding weight, cost, and reliability issues, if Ansil Adams didn't need them.

Superfluous to many things, including refrigerators, coffee mugs, water heater, ...

I wonder why they don't focus on one or the other. I never use video, and some probably never use still. Perhaps if manufacturers concentrated on one of the two functions they could develop better products. I appreciate any input you may offer.

Ask the customers not the manufacturers. Manufacturers make what sell. I personally don't want video in my still camera but the majority of people don't think that way.

Why do cameras have all the different scene modes when all anyone needs is the (P)rofessional mode?

You can pay $2997 for a sliver Nikon Df without video, or $2750 for the all-black version sans video. You can pay a lot less for DSLRs with video capabilities, whether you use them or not.

One seat cars seem to be more expensive than two seaters too.

just nit picking a bit both versions of the Df are $2750 for the body only and $2997 with the 50mm f/1.8 lens.
