Some people run amok with a lot of lack of planning.

Same here. I pack my photo equipment before anything else including my toothbrush! The biggest problem I have is always packing too much. I will take 2 to 3 bodies, and half-a-dozen lenses. I end up using one body and two lenses the whole trip -- sometimes 3 lenses but would never use all six!

I have a habit now of using Lightroom and looking at all the cameras and lenses I used and what focal lengths. After a few more trips by this summer, I should have a good idea of what I can sell.

I once forgot to put an SD card into my camera before leaving for a nature hike. Obviously the camera was useless. But I made the best of it and enjoyed the walk. I never really carry so much equipment on me such that I feel the need to write out a checklist. A quick inspection of my camera bag is sufficient enough.

Yes, a good walk without a camera can be enjoyed -- by some. I have to have my camera with me when I'm out and about. My sister-in-law and her husband have traveled all over the world except for South America and she never takes a camera. She says it distracts from the experience. If she meets up with relatives in Germany or someplace else, she will take some shots with her cell phone, that's it. No travel log for her.
