Apple VS. Microsoft

I used Macs at work and PCs at home. Since I was working for a small company with very few computer savvy people, I became the defacto IT support person. Since I had been working with PCs since the early machines with a whopping 64K of memory, 5 inch floppies, MS-DOS, and had built a couple from scratch, I was more comfortable with that machine. I found the Macs easy to upgrade the OS and some programs, but really difficult to diagnose problems. Since Apple chose to make things less accessible to anyone but an Apple trained technician, it took way too much time in a business environment to fix things. For those people who are in graphics heavy jobs or have been using Macs for ages, this is their preferred platform. Not for me.

I’ve been using Mac’s for over ten years and wouldn’t go back to a PC with Windows. Other than the cost of purchasing a new machine, I’ve never paid for any OS updates or new operating systems. Apple gives each one a new name, but they’ve never cost me a dime. I would suggest a PC if one is into gaming or heavy graphics, otherwise, I love my Mac’s.

Linux is free, use Wine to run windows sw. Put linuxmint (free download) on your old computer, install it to dual boot. The old computer will run much faster using linux. When you are comfortable with linux just copy your data files to linux directory and ditch the old MS. I recommend linuxmint, go to linuxmint.com and download the os.

Although I'm 100% with your on choice of distros for use, linux really isn't meant for everyone. While Mint and/or Ubuntu have made great strides in making it easy(ish) to convert from other operating systems, there are still things like graphics drivers that require a bit of ingenuity and troubleshooting to get working properly.

Wine is a decent emulator that can help retain software designed for other operating systems. I use it in conjunction with Steam to load games designed for Windows, but it is still a tad clunky and chews away at memory and not 100% efficient with GPU usage. I would strongly suggest VirtualBox running a native copy of Windows XYZ for full functionality. Again, the computer needs to have a decent CPU and plenty of RAM to run a virtual machine, but it is by far the better option for those switching over that still need software from other operating systems.

I used PC for decades. Now I love my 27” Mac. I like that it all works together with my iPad and iPhone.

Look at all the Win10 users happily using software 10+ years old and look at all the Mac users who have to buy new hardware for the new OS and then new software the OS hasn't yet invalidated.

I agree excellent point. I also use Windows as I use software that is only available for Windows.

For all my fellow UHH'ers this is like the familiar Nikon VS Canon question, but I'm at a crossroads. My MacBook crashed over the weekend, and it's still an open question whether the "Geek Squad" will be able to recover my files and, more importantly my photo works in process. (Fortunately I had done a full backup a week before.) Prior to the MacBook experience I had always been a Microsoft man, and I'm currently relying on an old reliable Dell laptop to keep me going.

Both systems have their good and bad points; If any of you would like to weigh in on your Apple vs Microsoft preferences I'd be most grateful for your opinions.

I run both on my iMac. Windows 10 in Bootcamp alongside Mojave. I do internet in Mojave and lots of other things in Windows. I don't do internet in Windows - keep wifi turned off, so don't need to worry about malware etc.

I wouldn't trust Geek Squad anywhere...LOL

If they were good at IT and/or forensics, they wouldn't be working at BestBuy.

I was originally an Apple fan from the 1980's through the 1997 and used it a lot, with great appreciation for the graphics capability. In addition, since Apple sold far fewer machines than those using DOS/Windows operating systems, they were much less likely to be attacked with malware. But, then Microsoft caught up with Apple's technology and made its programs equally easy to use, and both equally need malware protection. So for the past two decades, I have been a Windows user. Now, when I use an Apple product, I find it more difficult to use than the Windows version. Since the price of Apple machines are still much higher than Windows, I can't imagine ever going back.

There is a "low end" M1 Mac Mini. $699 base price with options to double shared memory (add $200) and add SSD space (price is high, but third party external Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 options work for most folks). The $899 model smokes every other non-home brew computer in that price class.

One reviewer (Max Yuryev at the MaxTech YouTube channel) has installed the $899 version of it to replace (!) his $15,000 class Mac Pro. Mini doesn't beat the Pro at everything, but is faster at single core tasks used for most daily activities.
