Look for mittens or gloves for hunting. I have some photography mittens where the top flips back and the thumb tip flips back. There’s a pocket for the flipped top but I often use it for a hand warmer. I’ve had them for so long that I can’t tell you the brand.

Its -10F right now. I wouldn't think of going out for anything.

You might change your mind if you had the right gloves!

HotHands hand warmers! They last hours. Place in gloves; on cameras; in shoes; what ever is cold! Several sizes/ styles. I used some in Coldfoot, AK, -20° F. Worked great!

"...Tricks discovered?" Willy not one to waste money on "Chic" branded "Sports" gloves. So I simply cut the index finger and thumb out of a cheap pair of brown cotton work gloves from Home Depot. Less than $5, works well for shooting league soccer. Hope this helps or is at least food for thought... All the best on your journey Willy

any suggestions that work? I bought 'freehands', thinking the thumb/index finger flipdown would be nice, but the magnet gets so cold, they are actually worse than bare, so now use a winter glove left hand, bare hand as long as possible on the right shooting hand.

Tricks discovered?

Thanks

Try Vallerett photography gloves. I bought mine through Amazon. They run small. First bought size large (which I normally buy) but had to return and get size XL. They fit and work great.

I have used all of the combonations others have mentioned. I finally purchased some battery heated gloves off of eBay. Be sure to get the ones that have the heating wires in the fingers vs just the back of the hand. They work great. Now that I have them, I want the best there is... the heated gloves by Milwaukee, they are rather $ pricy $ You can find them online and at Home Depoe. Stay Warm

Try on Valleret before you buy - they don't accept returns and I found the thumbs and index fingers ridiculously long. The caps flop open at the slightest provocation - no good at all if you have to use your hands for anything but putting the caps back in place and even that is frustrating. The Heat liner gloves are quite good, though the fingertips are just a little long and fat for me to use the OK button and joystick array on my OMD-EM1. Alone they aren't adequate for long if it's much below freezing, but warmer and tougher than a lot of liners I've tried and they have a handwarmer pocket . There are a number of good shells and heavy mitts - just take care to not drag snow into them or let them dangle so snow can fall into them. Costco sometimes has Head glove liners that are a good value and seem to fit my hands well - not so warm but enough for a lot of purposes.

I bought some gloves from Amazon when I searched for dexterity gloves. I can easily operate my camera including the touch screen with them on. Here is the pair that I bought but there are other options.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XYZLFPK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These are not the warmest option but work well for me.

I have been using "Palmyth Magnetic Leather Ice Fishing Gloves Convertible Mittens Ski Gloves with Thinsulate 3M Warm for Cold Weather and Winter Men Women Photography Snow Shooting" from Amazon in the cold Upstate NY Winter. It is a "lobster claw" type glove - three fingers together in a mitten while the index finger and thumb are separate. The index finger and thumb are magnetic flaps. The magnets do not get cold. My fingers get very warm after a mile into my 5 mile trail walk. I also find that 90% of the time I can operate my camera with out using the finger and thumb flaps.

For me there were two problems: Thin gloves aren't warm, or I had to take warm gloves off to adjust the camera and shoot, and by then they were cold inside. My wife bought me a pair of Shaalek heated gloves. They have a rechargeable battery and heater in each glove. I can work the shutter and a couple of other functions with them on. When I have to take them off for other adjustments, the gloves stay warm inside and feel really good when slipped back on. Price was $84 from at Amazon.

I use Snow deer electric glove liners. I can operate my camera and my fingers do not get stiff from cold. I used to use Hot Hands but these electric gloves, which are expensive. but worth every dime are the best I have found. Be sure to get an extra set of batteries. The regular electric ski gloves which I use for my walks are much warmer than the liners but too bulky to operate a camera. It is worth looking into.

when I was younger and going hunting I would go without gloves till my hands got cold. I would put on gloves and warm up my hands then I would go out bare handed again and could stay out the rest of the day.

The Morris Feel glove has worked well for me While hunting.. I do not know if they are still available or not, or if they would allow touch screen operation.. the right index finger hd a fine nylon knitting and would allow good feel on the trigger.. and still keep the finger warm... Sorry I think they have been discontinued...best of luck...
