Most refurbished cameras were returns. They run them through an inspection to make sure everything works and resell them. Cameras that come off of an assembly line get sampled, not checked out 100%.

I bought a refurbished Nikon D7100 from Adorama a few years back, it worked flawlessly, I then gave it to my son.

Please correct me if i'm wrong. If you buy used from B&H, Adorama, or KEH, or the like, you are buying used equipment. That is totally different than refurbished. I do not believe that much of what they buy and then sell used is refurbished. If you look at items none say they are refurbished. That does not mean the equipment is in poor condition. I purchased a used lens from Nikon, and they specifically stated it was refurbished.

I bought my re-furb D7500 direct from Nikon with less than 10 shutter count about two years ago. I paid $599 for it.

Due to my field of photography (rocket launches) & placement of my cameras (on the launch pad) with extreme vibrations , heat, water...I use used Nikon D500. I have purchased safely from the B&H, Adorama, KEH & more importantly MPB.com I've found MPB provides a slightly lower price point in selling & slightly higher return price when you sell used gear to them. Other company is Roberts Camera & ProCam out of Chicago/Detroit

Do any of you Nikon shooters use refurbished cameras? If so, any problems? Also, which vendors do you patronize? Thanks for your replys.

Yes I do (and not just Nikon). No problems (D7200 and couple lenses refurbs/no issues - many items used, majority were keepers, couple went back). MPB/KEH/UsedPhotoPro(Roberts)/B&H/Adorama. All have been excellent vendors, if an issue with a purchase (issues have been nits with smaller purchases, or decision not to keep an item/returned "without drama"), quickly resolved.

Camera stores using Ebay platform, generally good. Couple returns, Ebay doesn't allow drama, no problems

Amazon Camera Stores (3rd party vendors) running about 85% good/15% returns, again, Prime member, no drama.

Nikon/Canon/others - Factory refurbs good as new, look new, smell new, very low shutter counts, etc. I will say to watch for vendors who claim "Refurbished" by seller/vendor (sure, but who actually did anything with it??), I only buy refurbs that come with the Nikon/Canon/other "refurbished warranty".

Good luck and keep shooting.

Have you experience the occasional mirror lockup Err on your D750?

Zeke all my Pro Bodies 2 D3s, 2 D3xs and D810 have been refurbs from Nikon USA.
All have been stellar... and pretty much at half the new price...

My D3x's are still my primary studio camera...
In all honesty after shooting all day with a D3x and then picking up my D810 it feels like a toy in my hands however the D810's resolution is to be cherished for league soccer... as well as it's lighting fast AF and amazingly quiet shutter...

I've had excellent luck with refurbs from Nikon USA... they come sealed with all components of the same item new. Even purchased my AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR II as a refurb from Nikon USA... amazingly remarkable lens, light weight and a joy to shoot on location.

Hope this helps Zeke.
All the best on your journey...

It makes me smile when I hear of your experience with the Nikon 24-85 f3.5-4.5 lens. When I bought a new D800 I also bought a new lens like that in a Nikon white box. A professional photographer friend recommended it to me in place of the 24-70 f2.8 dream lens. He had earlier purchased the dream lens and when he did a test of the 24-70 compared to the 24-85, noticed the 24-85 was as sharp as the 24-70. He returned the 24-70 and kept the 24-85 which he still has. I presently have two Nikon lenses, the 24-85 and a 105 f2.8 Micro lens. Both seem to be all I need so far and each is sharp as a tack. Never a problem with either lens when I do my part.

Have a great day,

Dennis

B&H. I bought a refurbished D5300 from them more than 3 years ago--have had not a single problem with it.

You'll hear this from many hoggers as well as me...when you buy a refurbished (by Nikon) product you'll be getting a product that has been completely inspected and brought to the exacting specs of a brand new item. I always look for a refurbished camera or lens from Nikon and know that I'll be getting a good as new item. I've made many refurb purchases from Nikon and NEVER been disappointed. I would recommend that you buy refurbished and put the money that you save toward a new lens or something else. Good luck.

Totally agree. I buy refurbed equipment from Nikon and get what amounts to a new camera.

I have my doubts about this...as an example; if the inspection shows that the shutter functions correctly but has a high count I doubt that will replaced or even adjusted it. Most likely only the count will be reset. Used means worn and the amount is unknown. I have a hard time believing a repaired camera is as good as a new one.

Its not and that is why it costs less.

Yes. B&H and Adorama, but any of the listed shops or my local shop. I also have bought all my lenses used.

With respect, I think you are talking oranges while many are talking apples. I doubt many or even any cameras with a high shutter count would even be accepted into a refurbish program. Also, you are guessing about what might be done at the factory when you tell us, "Most likely only the count will be reset". Do you know, have any experience with this or just guessing? Every refurbished lens or camera I have seen has looked factory new. I doubt a camera or lens with much usage will be completely blemish free as are those I have seen.

My understanding, from talking to a camera store manager who sold me my Nikon 24-85 refurbished lens, is that refurbished cameras and lenses are those which customers have returned with very little usage. They are then shipped back to the camera manufacturer who then takes the item and thoroughly checks it out to be sure everything works properly. Then it is placed in a different box with all accessories and sold as refurbished. It is no longer brand new and is sold for less. I would not hesitate to purchase a refurbished item.
