Light rain in the lower elevation (4,000') of town, light snow in the higher elevation (5,200') of Arches. Temperature hovered a degree or two above freezing, so though snow fell in the highest portion of the park, what fell melted immediately. By most people's standards, probably a stay-at-home sort of day. By my standards, a great day to be out.

Images from the Garden of Eden to just short of the Windows Section in Arches Nat'l Park.

Another fantastic set of images

Serious question: is there a method to determine how long ago those now-dead trees may have lived? And how long between death and eventual decay into the ground. Each time I am at ANP and similar places I find myself wondering about that. Their shapes are so mysterious, yet beautiful, no wonder you enjoy photographing them on your ventures into the wonders of Moab Land.

Actually, yes; there might indeed be a way to determine when a dead tree died: 'dendrochronology.' I'm not a dendrochronologist, but as I understand it from doing other kinds of archaeology, its a process by which a tree's growth rings are studied in detail and correlated to the micro changes in a region's climatic context. So far as determining the time it would take between death and decay, I'd bet a forensic specialist on a three seasons ago rerun of 'CSI' (the tv show) could probably tell you.

I just like their shapes --their twists and turns and tumbles-- and don't much think that much about their ages.
