I shoot JPG... so moving files from SD card to computer was no problem until about a week ago. Suddenly Windows 10 Photo changed the way it behaves with no different changes or input from me. Windows Update maybe? I used to move my photos from SD card reader to the data drive with a couple of keystrokes and it put them in my data drive pictures folder. It put them in a folder with a year/month format for the shooting date. I would then just add the day to the file name now in my pictures folder and move it to the proper year and month folders inside the same pictures folder. Now suddenly, it just drops them into the main pictures folder on the data drive one at a time, not in a named folder, so when I open the folder after the transfer, there are sixty single (or however many) files instead of one neat folder containing those files. I then have to manually create the YYYY/MM/DD folder and move them into it. I can do the folder transfer with FastStone almost as quickly, but I was hoping somebody might know a quick fix or have an idea for the Windows Photo problem. Windows 10 Photos would be a great little program for managing JPGs if it didn't have so many flipping bugs. Hope this question is in the right place. TIA!

I highlight the files on the card and drag them to whatever folder I want on the computer. (Windows 10).

Inside your DCIM folder on the SD there is probably a folder named with the date shot. Simply drag and drop that folder to the required destination.

I also noticed this with the latest update! The solution above works nicely.

I had the same problem. What I do now is create the folder that I want the pictures in, then put my card in the reader, when Photos opens I can then tell it to put the photos in the folder I just created.

Same problem. I am not computer literate so I am completely confused.
Is there a simple solution?

This is what I've been doing since the last Windows update. I googled the issue and the problem is widespread. The above description is the "solution" I landed on. It's a couple extra unnecessary steps but it works.

Not necessarily so. At least not on my two Sony's nor my wife's various Nikon Coolpix's. However, the file manager in your computer can show you the dates for the photos so it's still very easy to pick the ones for the most recent date (for example).

The way the camera creates folders inside DCIM is often a user setting.

Check the preferences settings in your Photos app. Initially on my iBook there was a setting for Apple Photos to open and download photos and import them to the pictures folder.

I have been using Downloader Pro for more than a decade now. I create a template that tells the program what to do with images on a card. When I attach a card to my computer DP comes up and displays the thumbnails. I can select one, several, all from one date, or all from multiple dates. I then give it a descriptive text string (e.g. Suzie's Birthday Party). The program then takes the selected files, renames them with the text string and the date and time, then places them on my disk in a folder named for the descriptive text.

The photos always go to the right place and they stay there so when I import them into Lightroom I never have to worry about them getting moved, which would cause LR to lose them.

a6k, I agree that my D7100 DCIM file is currently not date related in naming convention. That's what had me a bit baffled in the beginning because I just bought the D7100 for my walk-around setup and was blaming it for the new glitch until I tried the D7500 which had functioned perfectly in that regard right up until this time and it too had lost the ability. So thank you all for the input. It's nice to know I can continue with a little adjustment to my normal habits. I'll try the idea of creating an empty date named folder in advance that's already located at it's final destination and then just point Windows Photo to that when I import. It's a couple more strokes to do that initially, but then no moving after the fact. Thanks again for all the prompt and helpful input!

Don’t use Photos. Open your SD card with File Explorer, select the photos, and copy them to wherever you want them to be.
