Thanks. A lot of responses are agreeing with Epson.

On the recommendations to my query (see https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-680481-1.html) I bought the Epson V600 and can attest that it solved my problems with scanning old B&W negatives. I use Vuescan with it, but the Epson software works very well too.

With what OS?

Lots of people like the V600 Epson. I paid the big bux and bought a v850 but had a special project at the time that demanded (I *thought* at least, lol) that quality. But I'm betting the V600 is a great option.

I bought a V600 too. Scanning of B&W negatives was incredibly good.

At the time it was compatible with Word8 but not 10. The result is that the tabs on the actual scanner do not work.
Consequently it is a multistep procedure to copy one piece of paper- a real loss.

I haven't checked with Epson in several months. Have they solved that problem with 10 yet?
They were waiting for the "factory" to do something.

I use my 600 on Win 10. Don’t know about Word10

Another vote for the Epson V600

Epson Photo Scanners seem to be out of stock in most places. Good luck finding one.

If you have trouble finding the V600 then the V550 seems almost identical, perhaps it is, but the bundled software is different. Works fine with Windows 10

I purchased an Epson V850 Pro and never looked back. Look it up and see if it might be what you want. I also run SilverFast Ai scanner software with it. You might want to look at it too.

That's a great combination. Silverfast is probably the best scanner driver out there.

I also recommend the V600. I have two. My wife and son use one for family history work and I use mine for slides, negatives etc. Have no complaints.

I have the same Canon scanner model. I also use Vuescan. I have had 0 problems with the scanner or Vuescan.
I am on Windows 10 and have not run the scanner or Vuescan on my i Mac. Could it possibly be an issue with the Apple software? Also, sometimes with computers I have found deleting a program and reloading it seems to help with a fresh start. My personal opinion (I have both Epson and Canon scanners) is that the results from each brand of scanner is quite good. My suggestion is to see if you can track down what's happening with the Canon scanner or borrowing a different scanner before buying something else. New scanner won't help if it is an Apple or Vuescan issue. Mr. Vuescan is just great to work with. Helped me a couple of times. See what he says.
Good Luck and stay safe.

Again Epson V600 or V850 depending on your budget or needs. Since it appears you are using Mac OS X Catalina, you will need to use either Silverfast or Viewscan to operate your Epson scanner. The V850 ships with Silverfast, and Epson has it available as a free download for the V550 and V600. Epson scan is a 32 bit application, and incompatible with the new Mac OS'es.

I have an Epson V550 that I've had for years. It has an adaptor for film scanning. Always gives me good quality scans.

I currently have a Canoscan 8600F flatbed scanner. When Canon quit supporting its software I went Vuescan and have had trouble off and on since. Since updating to MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 all I get is a blank page and slow operation. The scanner continues to run even when finished. I haven't checked with Vuescan yet but maybe the scanner should just be replaced. Need recommendations.

Another vote for Epson as an option. The V600 is $230. They make others, too. Check Epson.com for details.

Meanwhile, SilverFast 9 software works with your scanner and should solve your problem. Check Canon’s support pages to see whether they offer a link to a FREE version of SilverFast SE for your model. Epson offers it for the V600!
