We are also going there the very end of September...doing Iceland's west coast and then on to East Greenland with Lindblad Expeditions on a National Geographic boat. We are really hoping to see the northern lights too...nice to hear that many of you who were there in September got to experience them. I'm enjoying everyone's comments!

For a prediction of the location and strength of the Northern Lights, U of Alaska’s Geophysical Institute’s “Aurora Forecast” was pretty spot on. They provide 27-day day-by-day forecast for all regions of the world so this can help for planning when to go. March-April and Sept-Oct are considered the best months. Note the KP Index for an indication of how active the lights will be -- range is from 1 (calm) to 9 (major). Iceland falls within the normal ring of Northern Lights with viewing stretching to countries north and south depending on the strength indicated by the KP Index. KP 4 indicates a pretty active show in Iceland.
