Iceland
Anyone been there in September
Just wondering what to except for photography
Was there 4 yrs ago for the 1st - 2 weeks in January - What an experience
I have a D810 w/ a 14-24 - along with the big & little stopper 150x150 Lee filters.
Also bought a 150x170 Lee soft grad.
Along with all my other lenses and the 100 Lee system for those lenses, I’m just not sure what to expect
Any suggestions.
Thanks
Don
I was there in March 2017 and September 2017. Scenery is amazing. In March the wind was everything they warn about. In September weather was generally great but frequent, short duration, localized rain showers.
Other than that, it is just a "place". I don't use the filters you mentioned, but if you normally use them in your photography I don't see Iceland being any different. Conversely, I don't see why Iceland would be uniquely requiring them.

Been there many times ... love it. First time I called down to the desk to see if the sun was going to come up.
Desk clerk paused and said...eventually.

Try western Iceland, looking for a 700,000 year old glacier-capped volcano called Snaefellsjokul, which sometimes can be seen from Reykjavik. And, as a side note, this is the location for finding an entrance that will take you to the center of the earth, at least according to the 1959 movie Journey to the Center of the Earth, starring James Mason, Pat Boone, Arlene Dahl, and Gertrude the duck. Good movie, by the way, but the volcano is real and I've heard makes for great photos.

If, by chance, you would be interested in touring by horseback for 8-10days, contact
http://ridingicelandtours.com/. You would be with a group led by a guide with great scenery.
I was there in September of 2018. Aside from the amazing scenery and the frequent rain, we saw an amazing Aurora Borealis, near Reykjavik. Read up on camera settings for the Aurora and make sure to bring your tripod. By the way, the Aurora just appeared, put on a great display of lights, and, just like that, went away
Thanks
Sounds Great
All you guys on this forum are so helpful
Don
Thanks
That’s pretty cool about the Volcano
I saw that movie but didn’t know about the film location
Don
Thanks
I’m ready for 90% overcast skies
That’s why I’m taking my filter system.
Hopefully I’ll see the Sun sometime through out the trip
Don
Thanks
I was searching for a horse back tour
Don
That’s a great place to see the lights
When I was there in January, we had to travel way North.
Here’s a pic I took
Don
I was there in very late August to almost mid-September in 2013, did the self-drive around the entire island including the Westfjords. Weather was very varied with some rain but mainly good sunshine, daylight was still very good and temps were cool but reasonable, but we were already able (and lucky) to see the Northern Lights one evening.
I did a very long series here on UHH just last fall, you might want to look it up: click on my name beside my avatar, click on the figure behind # of topics created, then go back to page 3 for the post 1 with an intro and map. Since this was a very lengthy series but with plenty of explanations, you might instead want to go to my photo-website, click on the "Albums-Chronological" tab and find the Iceland trip under the date 2013 August.
I trust your trip will be a go - hopefully the pandemic will be under control by then. Happy travels! Joe
BTW - I went back last February, a very different experience but also very interesting with nice snow-scene photo opportunities - you can see some interim shots of these in my newest album "2020 Trips - Interim Selection" right on top of the chronological listing.
I was there September 2019. Had to extend stay 2 days to catch the Northern lights. All other nights were either overcast or without Northern lights. Last night was spectacular.
Days were clear and good for sightseeing. Nights were chilly but not excessively cold.
For the lights, we took a tour to outside Reykiavic. You will need a tripod for long exposures. My wife was able to take a short video with her iPhone. Lights looked white with the naked eye, but green in pictures.
BTW, Reykiavik is compact and very easy to walk around, and has many excellent seafood restaurants.
Thanks so much for this
It will take me a full day to go through all your information, but I can’t wait.
I browsed through for about 20 mins and was in awe with your pictures
That’s what I’m hoping to accomplish.
Thanks again and I’ll be in touch.
Don
Was there Sept 1, 2018. Prices go down on Sept 1. There was a low pressure sitting between Iceland and England. We went counterclockwise around the island and had overcast all days but 1. Talked to a couple that got there about the same time and went clockwise and they had good weather the whole time. Around mid thirties to mid 50's. Had a great time and want to go back but go to the interior.
