From Pencil Sketch. Too much white space?

What seems to be missing is enough shading, which would give the subject better form. The process seems to be limited to producing a line drawing rather than true sketching. Maybe, if one is skilled enough, using the brush tool to add shading would address that aspect of the image.

I've played with sketches some and really like them. But I have found them difficult and really tedious to do. Would you share your steps and process in achieving them?

I find yours to be really nice with just the right amount of line. If the amount of white bothers you, you can always crop the image.

Here you go, follow this link. It's so simple even I can do it

Probably. Maybe a bit of cropping would improve it but the sketch effect is very nice. It reminded me of a sample from a print paper swatch I received this week - maybe another option would be to add a little selective colour..

Thanks I think you are right. Selective Color is next on my Photoshop learn list.

Love the bird Jack but find the background distracting, Maybe a closer crop and a plain white/off white background which would not distract from the bird and its perch...

Thanks for looking Val. Everyone seems to agree with a closer crop. I'm not a fan of a plain background unless it is black so left the texture there. I wonder if increasing the intensity of the bird would help?

A bit too much. With an appropriate crop this would be an interesting image.

Thanks Tommy. I can spend a whole afternoon just playing with different combinations. Most are junk but once in a while

Is it Photography when Post Processing is merely playing with effects produced by pushing sliders of tools???
Sorry, but I don't think so.

And I don't think so either, to the best of my knowledge I have never claimed it was. The name of the forum is "Post Processing and Digital Images. This is where we do thing to pictures that some people feel shouldn't be done. We don't claim it is photography but recognize it is a totally different skill set and in some cases considerably more difficult than getting the original shot.

If I offend you I'm sorry, but this is one of many things I do that is part of the digital photography world.

Yes, "The name of the forum is "Post Processing and Digital Images." I just should have sighed and let it go. And the piece itself is interesting in a way.

It might help, I found it was mostly the clouds at the top of the picture my eye kept going to...

Hey, thanks! I'll see how it compares to the process I've used.

Hi Mr. Gelman. I'm the current volunteer manager of PP Forum. Please take a moment to read our guidelines: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-184368-1.html

Participants in this section represent a wide variety of interests and talent. We are supportive of all levels of processing, including "playful" and simplistic. One never knows where a simple pushing of sliders will lead in our explorations

All the best.

Hi Jack, it's been enjoyable catching up with the comments in your thread. Since you generously allow edits (written in your signature line), I thought that moving the bird from the center would be more visually stimulating. A little "beautify" in befunky.com gave a bit more definition.

I like your crop much better than mine. Befunky.com is something I need to explore. On my monitor it seems to have removed the slight gold tint to the picture.
