If for whatever reason you don't want to use the software provided free by your camera maker, you can download free Fastone image viewer which will do what you are saying.
https://www.faststone.org/Also I would be surprised if file explorer already on your computer wouldn't do the same thing, perhaps with a right click after selecting the photos? Be worth double checking.
Me, I'd download the software that came with the camera. Easy to find online. When you plug in the camera you will automatically get a screen that asks you what you want to do with the photos. This might be something you set once in preferences or settings for the software.
What kind of camera?

Once again, the PROGRAM (APP) supplied by my camera's manufacturer has the feature that creates folders of the date(s) the file was taken when transferring. It came on a CD with the camera and is also available at their website. I expect that Nikon offers a similar thing.
Yes, my camera is a Canon 7D ii. I have the solution disk with EOS utility 2.4 on it already installed on my computer but I don't seem to have a cable with the type of USB connection on the camera. It is not one of the normal USB connectors. As indicated earlier, Temuna and I have apparently just used Windows program Photos to transfer pictures to the computer by plugging the SD card directly into the computer. After a Windows update, we can't do it the simple way anymore with Photos automatically setting up the date folders.

For all my EOS cameras (only), the EOS Utility is the program that creates folders with the date the photo was taken that I use to transfer files to my PC. It is version 3.4.0.0. This version can distinguish between different models and use different settings, including different folder branches, for each model. It can also work via wi-fi as well as USB cable.
If you are using a 7D ii, you can get the "EOS Utility" either from the disc (which is probably an earlier version) or from the Canon website. If you use the website, you will need to navigate to the 7D ii support page and give the body number of your camera when asked.

Thanks for your help. I will try to follow your guidance. I did find the correct cable and connected it but got the message that it was not a proper connection. I will probably work on this tomorrow as I have some other things I need to do this afternoon. Thanks again.
While the only thing which has "changed" was the Windows 10 update, I will update the Firmware on the D7200 to see if that helps.

For so many years that I do not remember how I set it up, when I would download my pics (D7200, and prior) they would automatically go into folders by date under Pictures. After a recent Windows 10 update that stopped happening and I cannot figure out how to reestablish the process. I know I can (and have) create folders and put new photos into them, but that is a multi-step process. It is easily manageable for a small number of shots but will be a real pain if, as and when we can travel again and I come home with many hundreds of shots to process.
Windows Help was of no help, suggesting it was a camera problem, which I really do not think is the case.
Any suggestions?

I also have contacted Windows and am resolved that they apparently don't plan to do anything about our problem. I had to purchase a cable to connect my Canon 7D ii camera to my computer and am going to have to use it to transfer pictures instead of just putting the SD card in the computer slot to have the pictures placed in folders by the date taken. Adorama apparently did not send me the cable or the correct cable when I ordered the camera from them. I had a very difficult time convincing the Best Buy salesman that they had the cable I needed, but I had confirmed ahead of time on the internet that they had it available at their store, so with some help, he finally found it. I would like to thank all of the UHH members that provided guidance to me in getting our problem addressed and resolved.

Yes, this now works, thanks to all but especially to you and to bleirer. As I indicated, I had to get a cable with a mini B connector from Best Buy. I had tried to connect with a cable that I had, that had apparently come with my old Rebel XSi camera and thought that it was connected. So I had never actually connected to the 7D ii before, I had always taken the SD card out of the camera and inserted it into the computer slot to transfer pictures. I will now have to use the cable if I want the date folders to be automatically set up.
