Sorry, I had gotten caught up in the discussion.
I really think the question was, did Ansel Adams's preferred film equal the latitudes of a present day raw file or a Jpeg file.

No, the question was " did AA shoot raw"

Some think that is a perfectly valid question. Not knowing that Adams didn't have digital cameras.
A lot of people slept through their history classes and never bother to consider that things have not always been as they know them now. I once had a student (8th Grade) who asked "Why didn't they just buy an airline ticket?" during a lesson on the hardships of Columbus and his crews crossing the Atlantic in their rather small and slow sailing ships. The kid was serious, he didn't realize how different our modern world is from the year 1492.

Pretty sure he wore clothes, he shot in some pretty wild and cold places.

You are soooo right. And it's worse now. These kids today think the are getting an education by doing home studies. They do, and they don't. They and their parents do not get it. There is a lot more to be gained from going to school. I have a grand daughter that lets her kids do home study while she works 100 miles away, and get husband works too locally. She does not get it. I think what you saw is getting worse. And it has nothing to go with covid. It was happening before covid.

Have a good one.

Ansel Adams would definitely take Raw images.
The question is, would he pay a monthly fee for Photoshop, or use free software like Gimp? 😎

Ansel was basically using a "RAW" negative that the camera made and he processed, and using burning-in and dogging in post processing created a finished picture. So basically he used the first "RAW" mode.

I should start doing that. I have both a D7100 and D7200, each with two 32 GB SD cards. Plenty of room for both file types.
My most prolific shooting day I shot, maybe, 700 images. I've got a 5 TB hard drive so there is plenty of room THERE, as well.
I agree, you should. I shoot a puny Canon 80D with a 64GB SanDisk Extreme Pro (10) card, RAW + JPG and download over my Cat-5E home network to my 12 TB QNAP RAID-5 NAS (Network attached storage) with weekly backup to the USB-3 attached 9TB RAID-5 array (no problems as I only have 5TB Data so far on the NAS).

I the film genre the only "jpg" equivalent would have been Polaroids!

Nope! He didn't shoot raw but he didn't shoot JPEG either. Whatever he did shouldn't influence what you do if it does then you should be using an 8x10 and not a D4.

I agree with your statement. The choice of making an image from a 14-bit image compared to an 8-bit one provides a lot of advantages. In my case, I've migrated to using a 16-bit sensor most of the time. The difference is noticeable.

Oh? Ansel Adams was a master post processor in the dark room. As he was always looking for the highest quality in him images I feel it is safe to bet that he would have used RAW to give him the 14-bit rather than an 8-bit image file to manipulate.

Answer to the exact question in the topic of the thread? No... He did not shoot RAW because he didn't shoot digital. But I bet he'd want to if he were still alive and throwing down bangers like Moonrise Over Hernandez 🤘🤘
