You can get a Nikon SB800 for less than $100 on eBay. Or you can get a Yongnuo or Godex for a bit less, but make sure that you get one for Nikon as they make them for all cameras as well as manual flashes. All are good. The 800 does great TTL, even off-camera. I think that the 800 might be your best buy.

Thanks! The 800 looks good and affordable.

Great flash.
Now you’ll need to get a trigger for it.
Godox is still my favorite for that too.
You need a transmitter and receiver for Nikon.
Phottix Odin makes great set with rock-solid performance.
Pocket Wizard makes several. They are considered one of the best.
If you can find an Nikon SU-800, it will work using infrared to control the SB-800.
I just sold one here recently.

Orrrr.... you can get another Nikon flash to control it- most work as “commander” units.
Not the SB-600, but the SB 700, 800, 900, 910 do.

On the other hand, you said affordable (a relative term), which I interpret as relatively inexpensive...
Godox is your best bet.
Their flash units have radio receivers built in already.
They make the most extensive range of flash units on the market.
I have 4 of them and they are pretty easy to use.
I've ditched Nikon for Godox and I even have the top of the line SB-5000.

I see that I need to look up some tutorials about off camera flash. Thanks for your advice!

You’re quite welcome!
Copied my response from another thread here:

Lots of resources to learn from.
One that’s very good on FaceBook is: Learn to Light an OCF lighting community.
They’re very helpful there.

Strobist website is pretty good too.
They have several sections starting with Lighting 101

Joe McNally’s site is another great one.
I took an in-person workshop with him years ago and he was a great teacher.
It was amazing to see what could be done with just speedlights.
I have several of his books.
Look at Neil van Niekerk’s site as well for more good tutorials.

A lot of off-camera flash work on my website- see the link in my signature line below.
