I'm looking for an affordable flash for my Christmas gift D500. I seldom use flash, but I would like to be able to use one off camera. Are there any decent ones under $150?

I Highly recommend the Godox V860II-N It's Awesome unit. Amazon sells them for $179.00 (Might be a bit more than you wanted to spend though)

Yes there are. Check out Neweer. I have a pair of them that I use with my D500 and they have worked flawlessly for more than a year now. Way less expensive than Nikon's. Light weight but durable. I got mine from B&H.

I have bought a 600 and an 800 nikon speedlitrs off ebay for less than 200.00 for the pair. They look like new.

How would you use it off camera? Mounting it on something or holding it in one hand? If I were to use the flash mounted on a stand I would use a cheap flash in manual and thus compatibility is not an issue.

I bought the Godox TT685N TTL and can recommend it. It is a really good flash unit... I use it on my Nikon D800. This flash is $110.00 at B&H right now. Links below.

The same flash with the XProN Trigger Kit is $179.00, also at B&H right now.

Sunpak DF4000u. You can get a pair for $120 and they interact with each other by optical signals.

My favorite flash for my D500 is the Nikon SB-900. Here is a mint one off ebay within your budget. But it will probably go fast.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-SB-900-Speedlight-Flash-SB900-224/143903771422?hash=item2181554b1e:g:xqwAAOSw1Ylf7PZf

I love turning the flash head around 180 degrees and aiming in up at a 45 degree angle, I use manual exposure on my camera and TTL flash mode on the flash. Makes excellent indoor exposures. Private message me if you get one and I will walk you through making your flash unit sing for you.

I have two Yongnuo YN-560IV(560III
I too wanted off camera capabilities.
The don't have TTL I bought them from a fellow HOGer.
It was 2 flashes and transmitters all I need.
I have friends with the Godox and the like them.
But I would look for TTL the next one I buy

Here a link they have TTL
