Rostok, Germany – St. Mary’s Church
Rostok, Germany – St. Mary’s Church
In 2008 I took a cruise of the Baltic Sea that visited a number of ports. One of those was the city of Warnemünde, Germany. Just a short boat ride takes one to the city of Rostok (or Rostock). There are several major churches in Rostok, and I had the opportunity to visit 2 of them. This set is about the St. Mary’s Church (Marienkirche), which was built around 1265, and is Lutheran. The triple-nave cross-shaped basilica is in Brick Gothic, a building style typical of the Hanseatic port cities of northern Germany. The huge tower with a baroque lantern at the top was not completed until the end of the 18th century. The high altar was built in 1721 by a Berlin craftsman, mainly from painted wood. The astronomical clock was built in 1472 by Hans Düringer, a clockmaker from Nuremberg. It is the only one of its kind still in working condition with its original clockworks. The huge baroque facade of the "Marienorgel" was designed and built in 1770 by Paul Schmidt, organ builder of Rostock, and has been rebuilt several times. It has 83 stops and 5,700 pipes.

Interesting, David.
Thank you very much! (I was wondering if anyone was going to comment here. The other set has way more activity.)
