for now we don't even know what kind of viewfinder it is. Is it a reflex viewfinder or is it an EVF or if it's just simply a direct optical viewfinder with the image not thru the lens?

I went to use my camera for Christmas time, and when looking through the view finder, everything is dark and blurry. I've switched lenses, and the result is the same. The photos I take turn out ok, autofocus is working fine. I've tried turning the diopter with no luck. Would this be the focusing screen? Any suggestions is greatly appreciated!

Could the DOF button be stuck?

What good would a picture of a blurry focusing screen do??

Acoarst you’re right, but lacking a grasp of the obvious is a UHH tradition :-(

Blurry and dark is what you’d see if the screen fell out. The AF and metering cell do not need the screen so pix would still be OK. Beats me how you could unlatch the screen by accident but users can be amazingly creative in unfortunate ways.

The real explanation is still unclear but it’s always safer to assume user error.

Without you telling us the type, brand and model of camera... and possibly uploading an image with the EXIF intact... we can only guess what might be wrong.

My guess is that you have something set incorrectly, like some previous responses. But I'm just playing the odds. (90% of "camera failures" are actually "user errors". Nothing wrong with the camera.)

If you are using "LIVE VIEW" the view finder will not work, it's one or the other, not both.

There is an adjustment wheel next to the view finder. In good light adjust that wheel till you can see clearly. It adjust the camera to your eyes.

And since the problem makes it too dark to see, aim the camera toward the sunny sky at noon to adjust it.

True but that’s a good reason to advise just junking the camera. One can only advise based on the info from the user.

So, junk it and buy a new one. Always likely to be user error but based on the info supplied, just throw money at it ... the more the better.

Is your viewfinder fogging over? that can happen if your camera is cold.

Interesting idea. Some types of humidity are very dark, especially if left over from a recent moonless night.

When you change the iopter, is there any change in the focus. Methinks it is tied to the diopter.
That would make everything get dark, wouldn’t it ... or maybe it’s a 3rd party battery or a bent contact. Those are always suspect in these mysteries.

But what’s currently known of the make and model suggests that the camera is better off just pitched into the dumpster rather than fuss over it.

Sorry I didn't give more detail earlier; here is more info.
Canon EOS 7D
Canon 50MM EF 1:1.2lens
Tamron 18-270MM lens
Camera is not fogging up from being outdoors; it's been inside the whole time. Live view finder works fine, but is turned off, I've tried the "adjustment wheel" beside the view finder; nothing changes. No children or food particles, battery is in place otherwise no pictures would be able to be taken.
Camera is not going into the dumpster at this point...
