So many people seem to save hundreds of dollars using coupons. They don't usually work for me because I buy store brands. Hannaford (supermarket) gives quarterly rebates for buying their store brands, and I save money that way. Saving $1.00 on an item that costs $2.00 more doesn't make sense to me. When I get the email from Hannaford with a list of a hundred brand name coupons, nothing interests me because they cost more to begin with.

Speaking of coupons, remember when you would get coupons for 2¢?
So many people seem to save hundreds of dollars us... (show quote)

Back in the '70s I did the coupon thing and kept track of what I'd saved. In 4 years I saved $11,000 in coupons and refunds. Back then they had coupons for essential foods not just junk food as they seem to have today. Most weeks I'd save about 30% on my total bill. These days I only buy what is on sale at the local Shaw's and plan meals from that. Once a month a take a trip to Market Basket for essentials that are a lot more money in other stores.

Yes, Giant (locally) has "in store" coupons that are applied at checkout.
Sometimes I'm surprised that I received discounts on various items.

Many stores do that if you just swipe their card. I never really know what I’m getting a “deal” on.

I remember those coupons. I also remember "Eagle Stamps" and "S&H Green Stamps" and for those of us of real age...remember "Mills" which were used as fractions of a penny? It was my job to lick the stamps and put them in the books for my Grandmother. The Mills were a plastic type material and different colors to denote different fractions of a penny.

Coupons never seem to apply to the items we purchase.

These days, they do not. Years back you could get coupons for most essential items like flour, toothpaste, detergents, bath soap, shampoo, frozen veggies, canned foods, etc. Now, it seems they're pretty much for junk food.

With Hannaford, I clip coupons (Hannaford coupons), and when I enter my phone number at the register, they are applied automatically, even if I use the DIY register.

Then why do you clip them?

As a creature of habit my wife knows exactly what she wants so she saves the coupons for those items in her purse. Not a lot of savings but enough for her to deal with. We also get fuel from the same store as they give us a significant discount based upon the amount we spend in the store. Got $1.00 per gallon discount last fill.

You may not get them in the mail, but if you let you fingers do the walking through Google you are likely to find coupons for just about everything. In a real quick search I found coupons for Green Giant froze vegetables and Arm & Hammer cleaning products.

We used to carry an index card box full of coupons we would actually use, now they are mostly on the phone. We still cut out some, we find it worth the effort. We don't stockpile items or buy a 55 gallon drum of mustard to save a dollar. The hand pump is free, electric pump is additional $12.95 but we don't buy the extended warranty.
Store loyalty cards help us save more, also. We find competing stores often have price wars on popular items so we do scan sales pamphlets.

I don't remember those two-cent coupons, but I do remember S&H green stamps and others of that ilk...
