Ouch! I think that printers are now regarded as disposable mechanisms to get you to buy ink. Kind of like the razor blade model: companies will just about give you the handle to make you buy the more expensive blades.

Well, yes, that's how it had been in the last 2 decades. But as they reach relative feature/quality parity, switching costs are low and reputation/attention to quality/reliability of operation should come into play, my hope, at least. Needless to say I have a case of switcher remorse.

.... I have had great experiences with Canon customer support, which is why I buy Canon printers.

That is how you keep customers coming back. Glad it worked out. Happy holidays.

I bought a low-cost refurbished Epson and it had the wrong Firmware; took me a while to figure that one out. With one call, Epson sent a factory fresh computer and ink. I kept my old full ink when shipping the defective printer to Epson. So Canon is not alone in good service. Lynn, perhaps it was a roll of the dice for both of us, tho I hope it is typical of both companies.

I find for all their products customer service is outstanding. I would buy a canon product over anyone elses due to customer service alone.

Glad you got the results desired. Had a similar incident with Canon and the Pro-100. They sent me another printer long after the warranty had expired.

I have heard that printers are generally sold on the old razor model. They almost give you the printer (razor) and make their money on the supplies (blades). That explains their willingness to make the squeaky wheels silent by fixing or replacing printers, in or out of warranty, to maintain their income stream from the ink.

A few years back I had been using a Xerox printer for about 12 years and it finally wore out and parts were not available. The printer itself had been a good performer and over the 12 years only required service once. It used solid ink, so the ink changes were easy and no mess. I looked into replacing the printer and they had a program for businesses. You buy the printer. You pay for it over 1-2 years. All the payments went into an account that you could use to buy supplies. In effect, the printer was free.

That was 7 years ago and my "new" printer has needed no maintenance that I could not do myself. The solid ink was a wax pellet, and when something was printed, the ink was waterproof, a big plus for a farm stand. Of course the paper wasn't, but if the signs got wet, the ink did not run and the sign might get wrinkled, but it was still readable. (Fading in sunlight was still a problem). Total cost for the printer and ink over 7 years was about $1800 (~$250/year). It still gets used a lot. A monochrome laser printer is cheaper, but this is a full color printer. I figured that an 8.5x11 photo from the printer cost about 30-40 cents. Less for signs (which don't fill the page with ink). That includes the cost of the paper (I was using 24-30 pound paper for the signs -- 20 pound paper would get bent up when the wind blew).
