The image that sold for almost a million $ is only 1 of 4 mural-sized prints produced! It's been reported that Adams printed over 1500 copies of "Moonrise Hernandez, NM," varying the sizes and appearances, mainly in the sky.

This print had a lighter sky. Personally, I've seen the print in the Denver Museum collection and several versions in different sizes in various NYC gallery exhibitions where the sky was uniformly darker from left to right, almost approaching black with the clouds burned in to match. In the '90s for a professional retoucher working for Popular Photography magazine, I remember making a 4x5 copy negative and 16x20 print of a dog-eared 8x10 glossy publicity "file copy."

The "Moonrise, Hernnandez, NM" in Sotheby's auction garnered $685.500! You can imagine the total value of these 1500+ copies! I also remember when they were going begging for $125-150 each from newly opened photography galleries such as Witkin and the Floating Foundation of Photography (on a boat!) in the 1970s.

If these auction results seem too pricey, if you go to the anseladams.com website, you can get genuine "digital replicas" of his work starting at $129.00!

Be well! Happy holidays. Ed
