Atten: to Hoggers interested in the new Skylum Luminar AI

Watched the below video produced by Anthony Morganti on Youtube yesterday...

Anthony Morganti is a professional photographer and photography educator from Buffalo, New York... He is also a Youtube blogger and educator on the subject of photography, mostly talking about many of the different brands of software used for developing digital images... Anthony also has been a 'Beta Tester' for the Luminar AI product, been doing videos on the subject, and he seems to have a 'good line' of communications with the inside developers..

Well, yesterday @ the tail-end of one of his such videos, he has stated that those who have pre-ordered a copy of Luminar AI should be seeing the product on / or around Dec 15... See the below around the 13 min. mark.

I like and use Luminar 4 for certain processing. I like the idea of artificial intelligence (I need as much intelligence as I can get) but was hesitant to preorder Luminar ai because the total program (you can tell I’m old. It is not called a program anymore but an application) is driven by artificial intelligence. I was assured and that was confirmed by a group of us who preordered Luminar ai that every function has the ability to start the editing process manually.
Skylum had a rocky start for not coming through on some promises in the Luminar 2018, 3 and 4 version. For me, I never had an issue although as I stated I use it for certain functions. The Aurora HDR program (oops, application) has been and is flawless, as far as I can tell.

Thanks for posting, I should be on the list also. The video satisfied my curiosity regarding automated and manual override features so I am looking forward to using it, but will keep the latest version of Luminar 4 on my Mac as well.

Fully Agreed with you Rvenneman

I have watched many of the youtube videos on this subject by Anthony, and I come to the same conclusion... The "AI" part is, for a major part, more of a "Jumping Off Point" if you will and the user of the application/software or whatever you want to call, it has 'full control' over the end or resulting image to be published...

As for me, I do not subscribe to the use of 'Sky-Replacements' and other 'treatments' of that nature but, yes, it is there and it is absolutely "OK" for anyone to take the creative liberty with their own creations if they wish...

That is what makes "ART" ... I am not saying that they are one and the same... So, it is "OK' for anyone to do whatever they wish with their 'RAW' images... But, from what I have seen, the application will help improve the overall quality of the resulting or ending output image.

As I said, I have been following Anthony Morganti in his discussion of the 'Beta' version, and it seems that the image owner has more creativity........

As for me..... I look forward to 'playing' with my new copy of Luminar AI

I had a discussion about 9 months ago with one of the major trainers/photographers and we discussed what artificial intelligence was going to do the artists. He told me that he was totally against someone using ai and that everything he wants to do to an image he was going to do through Photoshop. I mentioned that ai is a new direction and things change and improvement is always on the horizon. He wanted no part of it.
I mentioned the fact that anything done to a photo can be undone. He still wanted no part of it.
He didn’t respond when I told him every time he uses a profile, or his stated first step in photoshop is the “auto” button. And basically every “action” is in its self is a step in automatic adjusters and the “auto” button is very close to ai because it looks to see what your images tones, color, and luminously are and makes a “stab” of what photoshop “thinks” it should be.
And then Photoshop in October listed a lot of their processing is and labeled it as artificial intelligence and then, and only then, it was ok.
To some people Adobe rules.

Understood Rvenneman...

Kind of like those who are 'Stuck in the Film World"........... ha ha ha
... They still believe that is the 'Only Way'

Like I said, "AI" can/is/and will be the Jumping-Off point. Then everyone will add 'their touch'

As for me, right now, when I edit in Lightroom, my first 'click' is the "AUTO" button on top-right of basic... Just to see what it will do, me knowing full-well that this is the 'first click' and there will be many more adjustments and my full consideration as to what I personally want to represent...

In closing... AI can either be a 'jumping-off' point OR, to the real mad artist.. it can be their 'soul salvation' beyond reality and what actually did exist at the time the original raw image was captured

I supplement LR and PS with Luminar 4. I kept seeing the super early bird previous owner specials on the Luminar
AI and grabbed it when it hit $60 knowing I have a month from delivery for a full money-back guarantee. I don't mind the AI to see what it proposes but I want the ability to change the result in a fashion I can with Luminar 4. If that is not available, I am returning the product. I'll check out Anthony's youtube to see if he has any more info on the product.

rvenneman and goldstar46, the only reason AI is a hot item is it helps produce a photograph of suitable quality for those who lack knowledge of photographic processes. That lack may be through a disinterest in learning and using the basics. For those folks, it's back to the Kodak days, "you press the button, we do the rest" sort of thing. This is the sort of thing that tries to replace photographic talent and skill with software. Marketing at its best.

As for the statement regarding film, there's nothing like it. There are things that can be accomplished with film that digital would fail miserably trying to do. At the same time, there are things that can be done digitally that would be difficult to impossible to do using film. Embrace both worlds. It doubles one's fun.

Humm, uh-hah, my fist project will be to use Ai to color Ansell Adams photos and then enhance using Luminar 4 which just ordered. Signed with my watermark but it will give him credit posthumously.

The link you provided is for the earlier edition of Luminar4, the new AI version will be out in a few days and is more expensive.

Merry Christmas!
