As a general rule it means that it has never had ownership transferred to a retail buyer.

Essentially everything sold in a pawn shop would fail to meet this standard.

Also on Ebay unless the seller is an authorized dealer.

I would like the collective opinion of this community for an interpretation of NIB before I take the seller to task. I purchased a camera from a seller on eBay and it was advertised as NIB. I expected to get a brand new unused camera with all cables and documentation in the manufacturer's original packaging. What I received is a camera with a filter on the lens that was overly tightened, a charger, and a battery. Admittedly, the camera was in pristine condition. However, the charger clearly was previously used since it had many scuff marks on it. There was no documentation and no cables. Furthermore, none of the Nikon original packaging was included. I intend to notify the seller that he misrepresented the offering but before I do so, I want to know how the community interprets NIB. Thanks for your input.

Have you looked at the shutter count? That could be an additional bit of information.

NIB has always meant ‘New In Box’ meaning its a product which is identical to a ‘New’ one except that the seals have been open. What you got was clearly used. You ought to contact the seller about the misrepresentation for a return and full refund. If that doesn’t work, contact EBay.

I’ve never known of a pawn shop that was an authorized dealer.

I always look for a list of what is included. If not found in the descriptive details in the ad, I text the owner to ask. That should have told you if manual/instructions, cables, lens caps, neck strap, etc should have been included. I would look at the original ad again. If the wording suggests to you these items should have been part of your purchase, I would contact the seller. If you can't work it out, contact eBay. I've found they will stand by you, if their investigation shows your complaint is justified. Also, take a photo of what was sent to you.

Are you sure? By that definition a demo can be sold as new with lots of shutter counts and scratches.

Or am I missing something.

The correct description would be “like new”, “Mint”. NIB SUGGESTS NEW IN UNOPENED Original box. However , if it is pristine in condition and you paid substantially less than list price, you might want to keep it and take this as a lesson learned. If you paid close to list price, then I would take it up with the seller and eBay both.

You have a camera in pristine condition that you bought for less than half what anew one costs. Check the price on Amazon for the used ones. You got a steal, so I’d thank God for a cheap lesson.

No one can sell something as New unless they are an authorized dealer. This is a gripe of mine since I see it often even amongst our elite membership. Something can be listed "Same as New", or Unused, or Mint +, but if you aren't a dealer, it can't be new since it was purchased from a dealer and is now second hand regardless how good the condition is.

Again, it can vary from state to state.

Again, as an example, an auto dealer demonstrator vehicle may have a few thousand miles on the odometer but can still be titled as a new car, qualify for new car incentives, get a new car interest rate when financing etcetera ... at least in most states.

That isn't really analogous to what happened here.

That is what I meant. It's never new in box if it's at pawn shop or is selling from an individual.
