I would like the collective opinion of this community for an interpretation of NIB before I take the seller to task. I purchased a camera from a seller on eBay and it was advertised as NIB. I expected to get a brand new unused camera with all cables and documentation in the manufacturer's original packaging. What I received is a camera with a filter on the lens that was overly tightened, a charger, and a battery. Admittedly, the camera was in pristine condition. However, the charger clearly was previously used since it had many scuff marks on it. There was no documentation and no cables. Furthermore, none of the Nikon original packaging was included. I intend to notify the seller that he misrepresented the offering but before I do so, I want to know how the community interprets NIB. Thanks for your input.

"NIB" to me is New In Box,
Off the shelf, never used.

eBay definition:
There is no specific designation for NIB, which is usually used to mean New In Box. The do define "New" however as "New – A brand-new, unused, and unworn item (including handmade items) in the original packaging" and New (other) as:
"New (other) – An item with no sign of wear and tear that is missing its original packaging, or the original packaging has been opened and is no longer sealed". To get any better answer you would probably need to post the entire listing.

I agree.
At the same time I wouldn’t just assume that NIB meant New In Box, I would for the words New In Box. And if I didn’t find them I would ask for clarification. NIB could be a typo for BIN= Buy It Now.

If he put NIB instead of BIN, then he is still at fault. I would take it up with the seller and expect a bit of a discount from what you paid, unless it was a really good price, or threaten to return it for a full refund, if that is what you wish to do.

My take on NIB is that technically it’s “preowned” and therefor not warrantied like brand new retail merch. But it should be nearly undetectable as differing from freshly unpacked brand new retail merch. Another way of wording it would be “mint or mint minus” and “complete AS IF new”. If it’s mint minus, specify the exact small flaw. If it’s complete except for a missing small item, specify that item.

NIB is a rather substantial claim but in context it is a descriptive term applied to the reselling of preowned items. It is NOT synonymous with “new” or “brand new”.

FWIW “demo” implies new retail merch with proper warranty but which has been unpacked, handled, might have a few insignificant signs of light use. It’s similar to new “open box” merch, such that an honest description is very important. “Open box” might be a repacked demo.

"NIB" is a nebulous term and as such, it is somewhat problematic. I would be hesitant to ever use it and would only do so for, say, a gift that was resold without the factory packaging ever being opened or any seals having been broken. I generally agree with the comments that you have already received, and would consider that it should mean "not touched by human hands since it left the factory."

If you want to keep the camera, your recourse is to give the seller a bad review. If you want to return it, work with the seller. If you don't get a satisfactory response from the seller, go to ebay.

What would you call new & not used or opened (in five letters or less)?

I think that is definitely misrepresented. I'd contact the seller, EBay and your CC or Paypal. I'd ask for a full refund and send it back if you are dissatisfied.

I my opinion the definition of NIB is that the box is never opened since it was close at the factory. I do realize that even if you buy from a reputable dealer it may not be so. Buying from Ebay I would accept that the box has been open and the contents have been taken out but the camera should not never been used and all the contents should be put back in the box the way it came from factory.

The scuffed charger, the filter on the lens are all NOT NIB
