Today, 11-22.
I was in the steam room of the Officers' Athletic Center at the Pentagon.
College freshman, no class that day so I was home.
Hunting season and my shell belt had a torn loop so I borrowed a needle and thread from my Grandmother and was listening to music on the radio while I repaired it.
58 years ago I was teaching my 5th period 8th grade mathematics honors class. The intercom came on and we silently listened, with tears in our eyes and frozen faces. I will never forget that day. I had no words. After 45 minutes, the bell rang for the end of class and we walked silently into the hall. The next class was even more difficult.

I was in 4th grade at the time, and probably wondering about my grandmother's birthday (also on the 22nd).
Years later, I found out that another famous person died that day: C. S. Lewis.

I’m surprised that there are no mentions of the significance of today in history. Maybe they will all show up tomorrow.
I remember EXACTLY where I was that awful day, and I often wonder how the world would be different today had he not been assassinated.
