Thank you for sharing these serene and endearing moments...

Thanks for commenting. It helped having been there myself, knowing what was coming next, and how much time I had to shoot (the litany very long the rest not so much time). There was a hired photographer on the other side of the very large church (no book stand!) who did a good job but with two priests and eight deacons he was a bit overwhelmed at some points. I was only interested in shooting the two men being ordained priests so they could send photos (and USB drives) home within twenty-four hours.

What is that one thing, one subject that you want to get the perfect shot of. The one subject you can't get out of your thoughts, it drives you to keep shooting.
The one that makes you constantly think of what lens, what shutter speed, aperture, what time of day, night.

Have you recently captured that shot, Share it of so. Share the experience, the thrill.
Looking forward to seeing the response.

I have several good places to go hiking in my area, in nature preserves or along the river. I am always looking for something interesting. It could be a landscape or a barge on the river, or a train on the tracks.

As a bridal makeup artist I'm obsessed with beauty genre editorials...

Below please find but a few of the hundreds of beauty editorials I've photographed... most of which I did the makeup artistry and/or trained the MUA... And yes male grooming is also on the list since quite a few very lucrative gigs were with corporate male CEO's doing their PR marketing imagery.

btw, the global make-up market in 2019 is estimated to be worth about 75 billion U.S. dollars.

Wow, these are spectacular. I don't do portraits or beauty, but I can appreciate these.

I'm an old guy, I have a home in Kentucky and Florida, two beautiful places to get wonderful pictures. Yes I have gone to the deserts of Utah to the sea ports of the Atlantic seabord to the Chesepeak to the ocean and the skies but my favorites among favorites is fall color, and ocean sunsets.

I have trees in my own Kentucky yard that when I go outside in the early morning and see the low sun shining on the fall color of those trees my breath is taken away. As wonderful as fall color is I have a passion for sunsets. In Florida, especially the South West Coast you can get again, breath taking sunsets. It's the colors. I'm in awe of both the autum trees and the everyday sunsets.

My photography subjects are much varied but I enjoy most the colorful subjects.

Great Grey Owl flying towards me wings spread wide. Eagle/Osprey/Kingfisher hitting the water at the precise moment the talons penetrate the surface. Stuff like that there.

The greatest reward I ever receive from my craft is when brides tell me after their wedding event how empowered they felt on the most important day of their life... amid the chaos of this "special" day they had a wonderful inter radiance knowing they likely looked their absolute best :)

Sadly we live in a society were people (especially young women) are judged aesthetically...
And now in the throws of a political contest even males have to spend an inordinate amount of time in a makeup chair as the masters of male grooming and hair styling create the illusion that their PR agents demand...

btw, I became intrigued with makeup artistry early on by watching the amazing transformation my mother created as she carefully and methodically applied her makeup every day... She was indeed truly a master of her own "art"

All the best on your journey John Paquette

"...a tip or two on how to get sharp eyes..." Ava'sPapa I calibrate every lens I use for optimum critical focus... I shoot only with camera bodies that have been "Fine Tuned" to the optic I'm using...

Additionally I use single point focus (only one AF point) in a "Continuous Mode" so the capture is in focus the moment I depress the shutter.

Since many of these images were taken with "long glass" (my trusty soccer lens the AF-S 200-400mm f/4 IF ED VR Nikkor) I have it mounted on a Wimberley Gimbal head. I'm a major fan of tripods in the studio, albeit not so much on location where off-camera speedlights in HSS at a 1/2000 minimum is the rule not the exception.

Hope this helps Ava'sPapa

Animal shots, for sure. You only have a split second to get a great animal shot, and it is almost impossible to pose them.

For me its capturing the northern lights with Denali in the foreground. So far I have managed a relatively fair shot of the mountain, but will need to go back in winter to capture the Aurora with it.

I would love that shot as well or any great landscape shot with a multi-colored Aurorae

Thank you for your very kind words Les Brown... Greatly appreciated! Though I'm passionate about portraiture much of the credit goes to these very talented models and brides... After laboriously working on their makeup looks for up to 40 minutes in prep I often develop a significant bond with them... This makes directing for the narratives we are seeking to create far easier...

Timeless wisdom I live by...

“The model has to give you the moment. It’s not you making it. They give it to you and you capture it.”
— Peter Lindbergh (Photographer Who Created '90s Supermodel Era.)

“A portrait is not made in the camera but on either side of it.”
— Edward Steichen (VOGUE Fashion Photographer)

All the best on your journey Les Brown

Scruples and Ava'sPapa... You are both way too kind...

Perhaps if you knew who my mentor was you would realize I'm still a work in progress...

Below is a capture by the gifted photographer I collaborated with... It is of an agency talent which I did her makeup and was the lighting assistant on the session... She attended a very prestigious university as a Photography major... The time I spent on set with her is virtually priceless... btw, on this shoot she had me alter the makeup several times after viewing the initial captures... Perfectionist indeed...

Hope this helps you understand my path...

I actually have 3: a bull moose, a snowy owl flying towards me, and a blue-footed booby. Have a trip planned to Galapogos in '22 so that should cover the booby! Just keep trying on the other 2
