Well both Canon and Nikon copied the German cameras but they couldn't compete with the Leica. While cameras with mirror were introduced in Germany as early as 1937 but when Pentax started making cameras with the mirror in the early 50's both Canon and Nikon followed and put mirrors in their cameras. They got to the top thanks to the mirror. Today some thinks mirror is a bad thing.

Over my 45 years doing photography, both as an amateur and the last 41 as a professional, I have used a wide range of cameras and lenses.
Pentax
Minolta
Brooks Veri-wide
Kiowa
Mamiya, both twin lens and SLR
A couple of different 4x5s
And for the most part Nikon
Each one was different and I got quality results from each one.
The arguments about which one should is best is for the most part unnecessary
The best one is the one you have at the time to do the job you need to do.
Pentax
Minolta
Brooks Veri-wide
Kiowa

FWIW, Canon reps were schooled to emphasize to retailers that this was the first advanced camera to be hyped by a major TV ad campaign.

Express whatever equivocating platitudes you will ... the Veriwide was the Veribest, 2nd best, and 3rd best of the lot. Period. And I certainly must agree with you that any argument concerning which is best is really unnecessary.

Not a bad thing, but it was just a stepping stone, an analog precursor to the Live View cameras that came next.

Having the gift of a Photographer Eye to see the photo before you take it matters most. You don't need the best or the newest equipment to get a great photo. And once you start buying glass for a camera unless your rich you are kind of stuck with that brand. I learn something every time I go outshooting, that's why I have fell in love with photography. And you meet the nicest people who always want to help, hard to find in any other things. And someday when I am gone a little be of me will live on in my photos. Plus it's the only hobby that has NOT put me in the ER Room.
