When I learned photography, we walked up hill both ways in the snow and said, 'thank you, can I have another.'

Since I mostly shoot wildlife, I use a long lens which means the weight of the camera is a very small part of the total package. And since the long lenses for the mirrorless Nikons are not yet available, for a Nikon I would have to use the adapter. And since the amount of shots one gets with a mirrorless is much less than a DSLR (ie. 400 with the new Nikon Z7II versus 1200 for the D850), one has to add the weight of the power pack and extra batteries for a fair comparison. And the Olympus OM-D E-M1X weighs more than a Nikon D850! So I am sure there will be a mirrorless in my future but the weight advantage doesn't seem to be a reason to go mirrorless. (When I want a small and light camera I take my Sony RX100).

I'm no pro, for sure. I must be missing something, wondering why you say the D850 gets 4x the number shots, both are 45 MP and support two slots. Or maybe you are referring to battery life?

Many do. And the humor impaired crowd enhance the amusement value of it all. I really look forward to seeing their oddly frustrated replies. It’s a more complete entertainment package that way.

Those who bother to post their petty irritation with his quips play the classic role of the clueless straight man in the comic duo. “Mom always liked you best.”

Competence can certainly be bought. If you are not competence they would hire someone else with competence and pay the price. You can certainly pay for a better guy behind the camera instead of paying for a better camera.

OMG, seriously??

and how do you think the more $$$ guy got to be better than the cheaper guy? why is he able to command more $$?

hard earned competence.

same in my line of work (not photography). You can't buy competence, intelligence, wisdom, experience, sanity, or love (as the old song goes).

Competence cannot be bought, it must be earned. Except for some specialist areas of interest, any name brand high end camera / lens combo will capture fine photos in the hands of a skilled operator. There was a practice in some film days seminars of sending everyone, participants and staff, out with a disposable film camera. Skilled photographers got good photos.

odd that some are so snarky here (putting it mildly), what is the point of that?

trying to shame someone else because you don't agree with their PoV is a waste of time and we're all worse off because of it.

we benefit from this forum because of the exchange of ideas and views, and repressing anyone just defeats the purpose.

there's no law that says you have to respond to each and every post, just ignore the ones you don't agree with.

just my $0.02

Always found easily earned competence superior to hard earned competence ... more innate talent and intuition involved.

EXACTLY. With the ability to see the final product before you press the shutter releade it makes it a no brainer to take a perfectly exposed pic. Skill? Only composition. Lmao

There is rarely such a thing as perfect exposure. Exposure, especially outdoors, is usually a compromise.

Maybe I mis-understood. Your are "Lmao" because you think that composition does not require skill?

Do you also leave your calculator home for a math exam because the calculator takes the skill out of mathematics? You prefer flipping through log & trig tables to pushing a button on the calculator?

I have been shooting digital with mirrorless cameras for quite a while. But my go to everyday camera, an OM-D EM5 mii, is back at Olympus for repair. 😭

So I pulled my DSLR out to use in the meantime. OMG 😳 it seems so crude!
First I can’t see the exposure, I can’t see light and shadow or the color that I am going to get. Then outside in daylight I can’t see the result. I had to move into shade to see the LCD screen.

Clearly the mirrorless saves me a lot of time in zeroing in on the desired exposure.

I used to shoot with a DSLR all the time and I loved it but it seems crude to me now.

By the way there is nothing wrong with shooting with a DSLR if that’s what you like. I’m just sharing my experience. YMMV.

I wish we could all stop talking about how one camera is better than another. It's really ridiculous. We all use different cameras and like to shoot different things. We don't all think we need the latest and the greatest - even "greatest" means something different to different people. For myself, I just want a camera that I can use as a tool to create photographs that please me. If they also please others, I don't waste their time by explaining that it's the result of a particular camera. I like to think that it's a result of my skill as a photographer.
