Why are they called wood ducks instead of some exotic name like Mandarin? Hope someone will enlighten me.
I'll take a wag - wood carvers make duck decoys for hunters, so I'm guessing that the wooden ones looked so real that the real ducks took on the name - I'm probably all wet like the ducks!
I was at Forbidden Drive in Philadelphia yesterday (Friday) and to my surprise there were many Wood Ducks. I've never been so close to these - had a great time!
